Gears for s2000
I need to ask you all a question. Its in regards to my s2000 and a different gear ratio/final drive. Basically, I have two choices in ratios. 4.57r or 4.77s. The difference between the two are pretty noticable while cruising in highway speeds and acelleration. The 4.77s will keep my car reving pretty high, yet it will provide excellent acceleration. My car with a intake, exhaust and 4.77s will put me in the low 13's to 13.6 on the quarter mile. For refference, those times are as good as a s/c s2000. The 4.57s on the other hand is a little more "watered" down, but it has the best of both worlds," Performance increase while maintaining drivability." It will provide me with an increase in acceleration, but not as quick as the 4.77s. Both will decrease my top end speed, which does not bother me. I want to hear from you guys! Thanks, Angelo Btw, I plan on autox's and taking it to the strip every so often. |

well i have 4.77 gears in my "race car" up from stock 4.31, and since i won't be driving daily for very long the 4k cruising on the freeway is fine for now (still get 30mpg :)), but if i had the choice to get another ratio again i would have gotten the TRD 5.1 gears and then save up for the TRD gear set too, in preperation for TODA 296/288 cams.
so i say 4.77 or nothing, you have the yaris to save you gas |

Expect much less than 20mpg with 4.77's in an S2000. Go Toda ITBs or go home!

the s2k guys are saying the 4.57s are better 1/4 mile wise due to less shifting from the 4.77s. So confused!!!!

maybe say you won't have to shift into 5th gear or 4th gear when you hit the end of the stretch?? shifts for some people cost a good amount of time from their 1/4 mile time
That's the only thing I could think of for them saying less shifting. |

after reading more into it, that is exactly what is happening. S2000 with 4.77s run out of steam just before the end of the track. I may go for the 4.57s, which will leave me room to upgrade to a supercharger. although, i had my first ride in a turbo s2k and that had a little kick to it.... I would go turbo but the only thing holding me back is the smog testing.

can you just change out your 6th gear (final drive gear, correct?)? This would give you MUCH better highway fuel efficiency and one SWEET top end speed!! This is REALLY common on the honda cars, especially Integras with Type R or civic Si transmissions. It's hard to say on a "street" car because there is way too many conditions/situations to take into account.
Are you on Honda-Tech.com...i'm guessing they might be a LITTLe more informed, not because it's specifically a Honda but because there are 10,000+ people who post on "gearing" on a regular basis. Honda-tech.com use to be one of the LARGEST Message Boards on the internet, like #8 or something..
