It all depends on what you're spending, what you're driving, NOW.

If you've got a 35-mpg car; and you trade "up" to a 40-mpg unit...the savings won't amount to much. According to that calculator, with 20,000 miles per year and $3.65 a gallon (what ethanol-free gas costs here) the savings is...

$260

I wanted to put a screenshot up of the calculator, but I can't with this board.

I have to agree about the driving habits as well. Do you live close to work or far? Is the car the main ride? A lot of things to consider if you want curve the gas bill.

I was quite amazed with the fuel efficiency achieved with my 2012 Yaris. My Yaris beats the published specs like you would not believe. I recently marked 44.4 MPG on a tank. Yay!

i'd lose money. Although with Derick acheiving 45 mpg in his awd Merc, trading up might not lose any gas mileage.

It is nice to see all the technology finally being focused on gas mileage.

I've only had my Yaris for 1.5 years. Mixed driving in the Yaris gets me 33 mpg, The car I came from gets 12 for mix driving. So at the 2 year point, the Yaris will be payed for in fuel savings alone. I've put 22k miles on the Yaris, and payed $6k for it.

For me, the point is the principle. There are many ways to essentially 'hand over money' to an oil company (buy their stock, buy gas, buy oil for an oil change, etc.). I want the very smallest percentage of my 'personal total' re this to be for gasoline for my car. Doesn't matter if it is a few pennies, or thousands of dollars.

That is an understandable principle. I just want to save as much money as possible. Anywhere money that is mine goes is not good. Gas should be $1 a gallon, except the idiots in washington like power and control far too much.

Anyways, I just hit 47.3 mpg, so I am very happy. Time to add the MI intake manifold to see if that will help to increase gas mileage. My car has enough torque going to the wheels now that I can keep the revs between 1000 -1500 and have zero problems, even on steep hills.

I live 20 miles out of town, so at least 40 miles round trip. My '08 HB (mid 40's mpg) improves my state of mind tremendously when I suddenly realize I need a widget for a current project and must make a special trip (as opposed to running an errand when in town anyway for work).

It just happened today, due to a math screwup on my part, I needed one more 20' length of 1 1/4" angle iron for a large solar array I am fabricating in my shop. As it would be cut into 4' lengths, I had the steel yard cut me 2 8' lengths and with the 4 ' scrap I was good to go, a rag kept it off the dash and the leaned back pass seat. Still a PITA but at least it didn't cost me 3 or 4 gallons of gas, but less then one.
