Amazing Gas Mileage .. way too easy.
So .. I have been like many here trying to get better gas mileage with my Yaris. I have normally been getting about 37.86 US MPG (lifetime average so far. Mostly city driving).. so I thought that was pretty good. I have only owned my Yaris for about 1.5 months, so I am still learning.
However I have noticed something with the help of my ScanGauge. I normally drive about 90% in the city (normal stop and go traffic). I normally seem to travel about up to 50-60 km/h in normal traffic conditions, so I have been driving in 3rd gear at those speeds. Well behold ... that is obviously the wrong thing to do. I have been able to get substantially better gas mileage by just putting it into 4th gear. (resulting in a lower rpm according to my tach) I am now getting as much as 54.70 MPG (4.3 L/100 km) with in city driving. I am just about to fill my tank .. so the next tankful should be interesting to see if I can maintain my much better mileage. I do tend to drive at non-peak hours so that will keep the traffic levels somewhat lower. I normally shift at 20km into 2nd, 40 km into 3rd and 60 km into 4th. But it appears that shifting into 4th gear around 50 km (30 mph) is a sweet spot where I have been able to get much better mileage. Has anyone found similar results .. in the quest for better mileage ? |
