I am looking to replace my Yaris's brake pads (~50k on stock), some recommendations please?

How do you know they are worn out? I have 78,000 miles and still on stock pads... still wondering if its about time...

Its funny, because after 15,000 miles the dealership where I bought it from said I was down to 30%, and that I should consider new brake pads 'soon'.

if you drag to a stop you likely have issues...specially in the rear because they engage first...drums.

if you're always slowing down really really slow then the rears will wear down a lot faster than the fronts. plus, if you are always in water, mud, dirt or just seriously having some issues with brake fluids in the drum they'll get really weak. every time they contact it'll wear much more than it's supposed to.

but, 15k is really sad for a lifetime of pads...they should last 50-100k miles.

I've got 46k on my stock pads that came with the car. I was thinking it was probably getting close as well, but I haven't heard any squeaking so I haven't thought too much about it.

By the way, not to derail or steal the thread, but it reminded me, I would consider myself a "hobbyist" wrencher and scanned the DIY list sticky and saw no DIY for changing yaris brake pads. Is there a good step by step DIY or should I look for it in the service manual somewhere? (I downloaded the one available here) Is it worth doing myself or should I just take it to some brake place?

you got to check it yourself, easy way is when you take it somewhere to get it rotate and balance ask them if you can take a look at your Brake Pad.
I took my yaris to Kauffman Tire to get it rotate and balance last couple years when i know nothing about brake & ask them to check my brakes, they said it's need to change badly, 15% left on front 25% left on back, that is when i only got 30k miles.
I got scared & grab a brake pad set from Dealer, go home took out my wheels trying to DIY and when i compare my pad on my car vs the pad i bought from dealer, almost identical in sizes, so i knew and learned my lesson there.

Have you also verified your rear shoes? Just curious since you would most likely wear those down quicker than your disc pads....at least in my experience. As for a recommendation for pads however I would check out the Hawk HPS pads like suggested above. MI doesn't sell something unless they believe the product is solid not to mention you would be supporting a club vendor.

^ thanks. the Hawk pads are very good, and the Carbotech 1521 street pads are excellent.

The EBC pads are also excellent, but I don't carry them.

what about the rears? where to get them? its on my hony do list and with 60k on the stocks its about time. i have the hawk pads on my mach and like'em alot. so they will do on my girls ride, but part of me wants to put a 6 piston brembo kit in the front and a rear disk conversion in the back. she likes to drive the heck out of it.

I found the rear shoes last longer than the disc pads though. Anyway, i heard squeezing noise from the front, so i thought its about time. I will confirm if it requires a change. Thanks for the suggestions.

my friends yaris automatic pads replace close to 90k still good for another 10k.. rear should last 2x as much...drum brake doesnt always get used unless you keep slamming your brakes.

The one here helped me along with that part of the service manual. If you have the tools or access to them and take your time it's not that hard. I did mine when I took everything off to get powdered. Make sure you read and use the proper cleaners and greases to avoid trouble down the road.

There are some videos on Youtube showing how to replace brake pads.. I haven't tried it in practice, but looks simple enough.

Haven't found instructions for the rear pads tho.

Not wanting to start another post, i have a question. My 2010 LB that i bought in Feb, has 22k miles on it. The breaks are starting to squeak like hell about 20% of the time, the rest of the time, no noise. I had the breaks inspected at the dealer on the 15k service, but havent had them looked at since. During the service the idiot tech tried to take off the drums with the parking break, he used the bolts and tried to push them off, then started using a hammer. I eventually told him after i realized he left the parking break on. Some parts fell out of the drums as they came off, i dont know what they were. He put them back together and havent had any problems except for the last 500 miles or so. I pulled the drums last weekend and cleaned out the break dust, but couldnt see anything majorly wrong. The noise sounds like its coming from the rear breaks. I guess i will have to pull the front pads this weekend to see if they are okay or not. Any thoughts?
