TMPS (again) and Vermont

I have a 2010 Yaris and have just moved to Vermont. Much to my surprise, a working TPMS is required to pass state inspection. Of course, my TPMS light is on all winter with my snow tires (and one of my TPMS sensors is broken on my summer tires, so swapping wheels isn't an option).

So I've been scouring the YarisWorld site to learn about faking out the TPMS system and have read everything that CTScott has written, and I was about to apply his modification.

But one aspect that isn't entirely clear to me, is whether his mod just turns off the light (which I think 99.9% of Yaris owners are interested in), or does it also prevent any TPMS warning signals from reaching the main ECU. I'm concerned that that the VT inspection station is still going to see, via the OBDII connection, that the TPMS is reporting a fault even though the light is off on the dash.

Thanks for any info and the info on this site has been really useful to me as a lurker for years!

Well, maybe my question is a moot point. From the official VT state inspection checklist:

- Check TPMS indicator lamp

So I guess they are only looking for the dash warning light.

I'm not adverse to having a functional TPMS system but what about the practical side:

- every winter, put the snow tires on
- go to Toyota dealership (45 min away) and pay $90 to reprogram car
- every spring, put the summer tires back on
- go to Toyota dealership, to pay $90 to put it back
- repeat process year after year

alternatively, using the one set of sensors and one set of wheels:

- have summer tires dismounted and remounted with winter tires every fall
- have winter tires dismounted and remounted with summer tires every spring
- repeat process year after year to the tune of $100 each swap over with the risk (and its a very real one) that a sensor will be damaged during the process

alternatively, just bypass the whole damn TPMS system and use my own sensory input to notice that a tire is going down in pressure; its really not that difficult to notice the difference in handling when one tire is down significantly; its a tried and true technique

Personally, I'd just live with the dash indicator on during the winter months. So many nanny gadgets on cars, people forget how to stay in tune with their vehicle and listen to what it is trying to tell them.

You can get your sommer tyre sensors cloned.
Go to a tyre shop who knows how to do it, they read out the sensors ID number, and clone them into the new sensors for the other set of tyres.

When this is done you can just swap tyres without having to program them again.

Off course you will have to pay for a new set of sensors.

Didn't know that sensors could be cloned so that they read the same ID's - very interesting.

I just passed the Vermont state inspection. I had applied the CTScott mod to fake out the system so that the warning light is off. I don't know if the Toyota dealership hooked up to the OBDII or just looked at the dash, but they were satisfied this time.

Is VT the only state that is requiring the TPMS to work? Massachusetts and New Hampshire really don't care if TPMS is working or not, and they are certainly more forgiving with customers with dedicated snow tires wheels.

Wow all this well-intentioned “safety stuff“ can really have drawbacks it seems. Here in New Jersey the only inspection is reading the computer for error codes. As long as there aren’t any you get a sticker. Of course the downside is there’s millions of cars In New Jersey that haven’t been inspected safety wise in over 10 years now.
