chepo jack

I noticed the craftsman jacks/ jackstands are made in china and so are the walmart ones, but the walmart ones are alot cheaper. Is there any difference or do you think I'm good going with the walmart ones?

Stay away from the craftsman ones - They have a really bad rep for popping seals and dumping hydraulic fluid (even jacking very light cars). Arcan and Torin both make good and fairly inexpensive jacks.

Agreed. I speak from first hand experience in regards to the Craftsman jacks.

I think with the cheapo's that it is hit or miss. I have a floor jack that I bought for $25 at an auto parts store 15 years ago that I've used and abused and it has never had an issue.

A jack is one of those items that I like to spend a little bit extra on and get something good.

A cheap jack is likely to at the least damage your car, at worst it can kill you. What is your car (or your life) worth?

I think every hydrolic jack company has had units fail on them. That's why you should ALWAYS USE JACK STANDS!!!!

+1
Most of these accidents can be avoided becuase the jack stands are sitting around in the garage people just don't use them...

True 'nuff. However, an acquaintance had a hydraulic cheapie collapse as the car was going up, and it did a serious number to the oil pan: don't ask me how, some people are just talented, I guess...

And use jackstands, not wood blocks, and CERTAINLY not concrete blocks! The few bucks are worth the investment.

I've had great luck with a Walmart hydraulic bottle jack, but the hydraulic floor jack I got was crap. The bottle jack has lasted 5+ years and has never failed me.

And yes, once the car is lifted, set it down on jack stands before doing any work. I also have walmart jack stands which are fine; just be sure you buy ones rated high enough for the Yaris, not that that will be hard as it's one of the lightest cars around.

As for jack stands, you can get really nice heavy duty ones at Tractor Supply Depot for $15 bucks each.

Jacks, like everyone else, I have a leaky Craftsman. =(
