parking brake sticking
I seem to be having a problem with my parking brake sticking. I have a 2007 yaris with a standard transmission. If I park for an extended period if time, about 3 and a half hours seems to do it, and I put the parking brake on when I go to try to release it, it doesn't want to release. The handle will go all the way down like it has release but you can tell by trying to drive that the brakes are dragging. You can also pull up on the handle and tell there is no resistance to it. If you just sit and wait for a couple minutes it was make a pop sound and then the brake is release. To me this says that there is something wrong with the cable. Like the spring is gummed up or something. I wouldn't think that it just needs adjusted. If anyone has any advice on this I would appreciate it. I think the spring just needs some lube put on it. If you think that will help what's the easiest way to get to that spring?

Springs break or get weak, they don't stick in one position and then release with "a pop sound". Lubing the spring isn't going to fix your problem. If something is not moving as it should, it's probably one (or both) of the cables but some investigation is in order though to see if the problem is in the cables or in one of the rear brakes.

I'm going to ask....07 bought new by you or used? Ever take off the drums and look inside? A little maint. inside the drum might solve your problem. At a minimum I take mine off to ck lining wear and blow out the dust. With the drums off you can have someone apply and release the emergency brake and narrow down the fault. Brake shop is going to do that anyway. Keeping inside the drum clean and dry goes a long way. I'm betting the shoes are sticking to the drums for some reson and with a little driving they "pop" off it so things are back to normal. Give it a shot and let us know the outcome.

We bought it used. Ill try taking the drums off and cleaning everything out. The brake seems to work just fine just if left on for an extended period of time it sticks, approx. 2 hours at least.

Im having the same problem with my standard 07 yaris too.
It seems that the parking cable works fine but the rear brakes are sticking and are still stuck.... how do i un-stick them to get the drum off?If i use a hammer where should I hit the rear drums to make them unstick? |

I never park on a hill. Only used the parking brake 3-4 times.

Yeah the rubber mallet did not release the stuck brake so i cut the cable which was seized and now all is good again... all i need to do is get a new cable installed when i do a brake service.

Glad you got it. I kinda thought with age water could find its way into the sleeve holding that cable. Might be worth a shot or 2 of cable lube.

Okay I finally got around to cleaning to brakes out. Seems everything is in working order with the drums themselves not much rust or anything inside the actual drums. But still after the brake is left on for an extended period of time they stick on. I still think it has something to do with the cable I followed it under the car and it looks like it runs up under the center console armrest. What the easiest way to get to this?
