The 40 mpg game
Ok, so I'm not about to become a hypermiler.
My car is a little over 2000 miles old and I've been getting a little over 36 mpg. But I've discovered a fun little game with my scanguage II that might change that. I did some running around today on my day off and brought the car home at around 41 mpg for today's driving according to the scanguage. The last few miles I couldn't help but try to max out my mileage so I could set a personal best in my new game. I think I like this game. So far I'm at about 38.5 for the tank and I've got 4 bars to go so it's probably too late to shoot for 40 mpg for the tank, but there's always next time. My first 40 mpg tank isn't far away I'm thinking. |

this summer i was playing the 45mpg on a tank game.... reached it... and then bumped it up to 47.... think i fell just short of 47.... next summer if i'm still living in the same place I know I could do 47... 50 will be hard... not sure if i will ever get 50 for a full tank

I just did my 40mpg challange... and needless to say, I made it by a long shot.
got 44mpg on the tank, but I seriously doubt I can ever get a tank bigger than that, on my regular commute. |

Um... you already are.
Perhaps not a hardcore hypermiler. But, you're playing the game, and that's where it starts. The ScanGauge is evil. I play the game almost every time I get in the car. Even if I start of not playing, or get distracted along the way, I always go back to it and find myself striving for 1 more MPG on the way home! |

I played the 42.9 mpg game this week, by driving around 5 mph over speed limit all week, except for yesterday, I went about 15 mph over the speed limit to get home in time for yard work. Bought gas this morning... 396 miles/9.23 gallons.

40.9!!! I got pimped I tell ya, pimped!
When I climbed in this morning, that's what scanguage told me I'd gotten yesterday (not the 41 I thought I'd gotten). I must have gotten sloppy the last 1/4 mile or so after I'd closed the glove box. So today I did over 43 pretty easily. Having the right mix of roads really does make a huge difference though, today I drove mainly on 45-55 mph country roads with just the occasional stop sign. Even there I couldn't help noticing how much coffee the other drivers must have been drinking. Someone could make a killing by creating a good tasting decaf. 40+ mpg next tank for sure. |

I HATE living in NYC!!!
Traffic every single day in one place or another. Stop signs and red lights every block pretty much. Pot holes and bumps(especially bumps) EVERYWHERE!!!! Suspension is dead. AndI can almost never go above 29MPG average. This is because here, if you dont accelerate hard, and do 65mph+ on the highway when there is no stop and go traffic, then you cause traffic yourself and get the horn or high beams. Either that or cut off. No point in moving to new jersey, same crappy roads. No point in moving further east on long island as things are more spaced apart which will cause longer rides/gas to be spent quicker either way. sighs! Can't wait to finish up with college and check out job opportunuties elsewhere, California being one of my choices in the next 2 years. |

It is a fun and addicting game having the SG2 available. You’re doing great so far! Pretty soon you’ll be shooting for that 50 mpg tank, then 51…. 52…….

The ecu learns each driving style, and as long as you aren't gunning it all the time like some people, it should do fine.
Im happy to say the last three tanks where 30.5, 30.5, and then yesterday 31mpg! |

I was trying to get under 6L/100km in my Yaris, the best I've got so far is 6.02L/100km (39mpg) - but that was when I first got the car (15,000km old) and wasn't used to it. I gave up after 3 or 4 tanks and am just getting back into it now.
Last tank was 6.2L/100km (37.9mpg), mostly highway driving with speeds at around 110km/h (70mph), with the back full of luggage or three people - including me driving - in the car. I think I could beat the 6L mark now if I tried. |
