Question EEPROM programming tips

Hello all

I am working on my combination meter swap project (changing my JDM meter over to a UKDM meter)

I am currently looking into the EEPROM of the meter to be able to correct my odometer reading. I was hoping someone could give me some tips. I am an electrical and electronics engineer so I do understand some of the lingo (though I never specialized in the microprocessor and programming part)

My EEPROM reader has test leads that can directly attach to the meters board (so no need to desolder the chip). I am able to read the data however each time I read it the values change, then sometimes I get read errors. Could the onboard oscillator be causing problems ? Is it better that I remove the chip anyways so that other things on the board dont interfere?

On the US meters I can read and program the EEPROMs without removing them, but for SRS ECUs I have to remove the EEPROM to clear the crash data, as something else on the board does interfere. I also find that the clamp on socket is very temperamental. I typically have to hold it with one hand while poking keys with the other. The 3M test socket never works correctly for me, but the Pomona works pretty well.
