Oh man, super jealous of the diesel. When the gasser dies, I'd like to swap in the comparable 2.4diesel (ala topgear). 404 km is getting up there. Unfortunately the truck had an owner within the family and he didn't appreciate it quite as much as I do. I'm sure it would have lasted longer if properly maintained. It's sure up to spec now

220mile - sweet you've gotta love that 22R engine, I have a few buddies that pound on them with 36" tires,, I personally do it with my 3B diesel...404km and counting...
My post was an attempt to clarify the fact that timing chains do not stretch. The gears wear and that what results in slack.

It is the same with motorcycle chains. There is a common myth that they stretch with age. If you measure one new and after 50K miles, the length is the same. The sprockets get worn and oval out, hence the need to adjust or tighten it periodically.

Sorry about the confusion. I am inclined to believe that a maintained Yaris should be able to go 400k without having a timing chain issue.

Really,, ok maybe stretch is perhaps too lay - the pins and bushes elongate causing poor mesh with the sprocket - resulting in premature wearing of the sprocket teeth,, culprit chain.... overheat it by lack of lubrication or poor lubrication pins wear chain gets longer...

Don't have acceptable tolerance specs handy,,,

they might not stretch like belts, but i bet if you don't change the oil enough and ignore other maintenance items you could get them to weaken and stretch some.

Yaris Timing Chain

I too have had a problem with my 59 plate Yaris which the dealer states will cost £800 to fix.
The only indication of the fault is the orange waring lamp on the dashboard.
There is no noise or any form of problem with the car apart from the warning lamp.
I spoke to the dealer who said they would not be willing to partisipate with the cost of the repair.
My car has only done 31.00 miles and I feel that Toyota should be willing to investigate the fault further,as the timing chain should last almost the same lifetime as the car.
Has anyone heard of this problem happening to anyone else, and if so how did it work out for them.

Another chain story

My '08 Yaris has 45,000 miles and has NO SYMPTOMS. The dealer says I need a new chain. I have an extended warranty which he says DOES NOT APPLY??
What gives?

Why 59 plate? What does the 59 represent? Why would the term be used along with the model name to describe the car? I haven't spent enough time in Scotland to know what this means, and I'm just curious.

You don't watch enough Top Gear. In Great Britain you can tell when a car was made by the registration plate. In his case a 59 plate designates a Sept 2009 to Feb 2010 date.

I would definitely want to see more data as to why the shop believes that a car that new needs the timing chain replaced.

Thanks. I love that show, but you're right, I don't watch it enough. I've driven around England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland....and once took a regularly scheduled bus from Dover to London. I've seen lots of plates, but I did not know the plate revealed when the car was made. Great thing about each new day, you can always learn something new if you ask questions!

Wow, it's been a while since I was in the UK but I still think in terms of the old system which used letters to distinguish when the car was made...

Now I see that since 2001 it's been numbers...

More info here:

what a crock. those chains should be good for at least 100k (old school thinking) as far as i know that chain is "lifetime" and in my oppinion. its part of the powerplant. so it should be covered under your power train waranty. if the dealer wants to fight you on it contact toyota direct. write a bad review. make as much noise as possible. hech picket outfront of there store. do every legal thing you can untill they make it right or just ignore them. 4 years, thats so bullcrap. unless your sitster drives like 50k a year or more there is no possible way. someone has a boat payment due.

Good luck
