The two valet keys, they aren't just metal and have thick rubber or plastic on where you would grip them with your fingers when you turn?

I'm thinking your 3 keys have transponders (chips) in them. So throw that new one you made into your wallet incase you get locked out and go make one at the dealor if you want one that works.

Experiment: Use the new key, but hold one of your other keys beside it.

It doesn't seem like the car would turn-over if our keys have chips in them. Maybe I'm wrong, but I had one like that on another car and I didn't get anything when I tried to use a copied key in the ignition.

I did not think that the 09 Yaris had the transponders in the keys. It was looked up when I had some keys made. I use a key that dose not have any plastic or rubber on it and it works just fine.

If the car is equipped with the "Engine Immobilizer" it uses transponder keys. My 09 included it with the power package.

The easiest way to tell if a car has it and hence requires the transponder keys is to look for the flashing red LED on the left side of the dash, after you shut the car off. It is visible when looking at the car from outside.

The other way to tell is to look at the ignition switch - If the car has the Engine Immobilizer you will see metal trim around the switch. If it doesn't the trim will be plastic.

all new cars sold in Canada since 2008 must be equipped with a transponder key.

Jambo101: one of the other key is a master key without remote. one is a valet key that will not open the trunk. the trunk can be locked by using a master key and turning LEFT (opposite direction than opening)

Engine will try to start when fuel is disabled. Just wont start. Thats why it feels like its trying to turn over. Being engine is immoblized. Since it has a immobilizer? That immobilizes the engine but cutting off the fuel to prevent theft. Incase someone tries to steal the car and doesnt have the key that is keyed to the ignition. Which is why you have to buy the special key from the dealer have them key and code it to your ignition for it to work.

I think it's a matter of the countries. I know Canada gets some goodies we here in the states don't-- back then at least, don't know about 2009 cars.

I'm guessing a LOT, but not sure. If they quote you something outrageous you should be able to find a locksmith that works on transponders to make you one for cheaper.

Most automotive locksmiths will have the equipment to program a new transponder key, and will typically charge far less than a dealer. The uncut transponder keys for the Yaris are about $30, plus cutting and programming.

Dealer list for the key is about $50, but the one that I checked with wanted over $100 including cutting and programming.

The part number for the 08 and 09 Yaris transponder keys is: 89785-60160.

The one with the built in remote is 89070-52850 for 08 and 09. The dealers get over $200 plus whatever they charge to cut the key, teach the remote entry system, and program the transponder.

thanks.
it's quite a bit cheaper without a transponder chip in the remote/key.
