Exclamation DIY waterpump RnR

this was from before the hack just thought i would put it up again.
1.let the car cool down.
2.disconnect battery.
3.disconnect plug and wire from alternator, lossen two bolts on alternator so you can remove belt.
4.remove 10mm bolt from bracket holding ac hose and slide bracket back.
5.remove two bolts from alternator and take it out of the car.
6.remove waterpump pulley three 10mm bolts and remove pulley from car.
7.remove the bolts from the waterpump.
8.get a jack with a some wood to support the motor as you will need to remove the bolts from the side mount and drop the motor to remove the waterpump from the car.
9.put new waterpump on and do all this in reverse.
10.fill up coolant.

only 15,000 miles but i think it was my fault for tighetening the belt to much when installing NST pulley set.

On Scionlife I have read about quite a few water pumps failing early. Same motor, same pump? Probably just a freak thing...

Edit- Well what do you know, 59,000 miles and my pump has some crust below the weep hole. These water pump failures seem to getting more and more common.

You have coolant all over the place. I just took my hood off because I was fiddling around with something and sure enough I have coolant on the under side of the hood. I have nowhere the amount you did and there was none on the pulley or in the vicinity. Either way the bitch is being changed out next week.

ztrack.. Did you also install a NST pulley and possibly over tighten the pulley belt?

What's the deal with water pumps failing on NST pulley equiped engines? I don't think mine was affected by the pulley as the WP bearing noise started just a few miles post the NST installation and the antifreeze "crust" looked like it had been there awhile, though I didn't see it when installing the pulley.

My belts are definitely not to tight as I like them on the loose side. So long as they don't squeel, they're tight enough.

i think mine was bad before the nst pulleys.maybe just the way the belt is tensioned from the factory.

THe pump's not covered by the warr. guys?
Why did'nt you just let the dealer shoulder the labor/cost?
Don't you get 5/60,000 on the drivetrain???

Yeah, I tried to match that factory setting by marking the position with a sharpie when replacing the old pump and I could'nt pull hard enough to even get it THAT darn tight!
I got it close to the factory "mark", and the new pump went about 2k before it started spritzing again....
I check the "new" (2nd) pump almost daily, it only spritzes very little every other day, it's been that way since Xmas. Mabye I'll install a 3rd new pump once the weather improves (I have an AC Delco unit stashed)

I have NST as well. And in the last 2,000 miles I heard a noise I knew shouldn't be coming from the engine bay. It was the water pump. I don't know what is considered to tight I can still wiggle the belt. And I had thought it was to tight so i loosened it slightly and then spun the belt so it wasn't to tight after installation.

Are you guys running the TRD rad caps too?
Perhaps too much pressure for the pumps seals?
Hope the Yaris does'nt turn out to be a Japanese Yugo.....

A belt tension gauge should be used to check the tension on the belt and to insure it is with in spec...

yeah well easier than going out and buying a belt tensioner gauge is to just 'eyeball' the deflection.....

where the belt is stretched between the farthest pulleys, push down on it it shouldn't move maybe 1/2" to 3/4" down ---any more and add tension......

'easier' is not necessarily correct. same with bolt torque.

if you do not have the correct tools,
you have no business in the engine compartment

(not -you-, I mean anyone)

anyhow, water pumps do fail and they are easy to replace. they should last >180,000 though

Someone told me if you can turn your belt to the side with one finger, its tight enough, so thats what I have been doing, I might have to tighten it a littttttle bit just a little because it has been squeaking bad on cold starts only when it warms up its find.

and my water pump hasn't had any problems yet, i have 50,000 miles on my car with the whole nst pulley setup (10 % underdrive crank, wp, alt.)

Yes we have that but with NSt they can say we over tightened the belt. Thus no warranty.
