To make this DIY the best it can be, for as simple as it actually is, I ordered up a brand new side marker from the dealer, so that I could start fresh and repeat all the steps from start to finish.

Boy, the things I do for you guys....

I got quoted $34 for a new pair of side marker lights from the SF dealership. Can't wait to see how to do this mod. As for testing, maybe the sponsors might want to pitch in for the people who are willing to go the extra mile to get a product sold (ie. the HiLEDs 194 led for the side marker)
