is it normal for the brake pedal in my yaris to feel loose laterally (left & right)?
I figured it's just the result of owning a cheap car or should I have it looked at?

check the brake pedal bush/shaft illustrated in BR-18 (Brake Pedal Support) of the service manual. try to tighten it if that helps.

well, just checked the brake pedal on my wife's 2011 highlander and it is just as loose (left to right), so I guess that's normal.

some play would be normal, but should not be noticeable while driving. Should be inspected, to see if anything is coming apart.
