What is the best deal online on a set of new coil packs??? Is there generic aftermarket stuff available ??? |

yuck. i'm sure there is some china stuff out there. sticking with OEM or better is recommended.

Napa has the Japanese made Denso branded ones which I believe are the same as the Toyota ones. If not, I found them as good. Avoid the Chinese made ones as I have had to return a few of them.

i have noticed recently that parts prices in general for the Yaris/Echo have been dropping considerably.
The injectors reman I bought were 30% cheaper than 4 years ago. There are more junkyard rigs around now and supply is good. I need to find a shop somewhere in the US where I can go and work alongside a mechanic to change the clutch. Should be a lttle cheaper that way and he would have the tools and lift.There must be a place like this around.....Years ago you could find decent mechanics all over the SE but it seems to have changed somewhat. |

Imagine how many forums a tech that is good has to monitor to be at the top of his trade. All of them. It is a very difficult job. There are a lot of things that can be serviced, replaced and repaired on the Yaris by a non profesional. It is one of the greatest cars for just that. With the help of this forum there are very few things you could not do. It is a huge help. Please respect the technician at whatever ship you may have your car serviced at. If you do not think he/she is a master at his/her trade then find one that is. They are around. For god sakes do not insult them by expecting to go in there and help them. They are a profesional on your car and every single other car made. If they are a ASE cerified Master Technician chances are they are one of the best in there field. This is not an easy trade. I would stick with Denso for coils. You could always get used ones from a scrap yard. I saw someone replace the OEM coils in their BMW on a guess to treat a misfire with Chinese coils and the misfire got even worse. He had already binned the OEM coils and the underlying condition was actually a vacuum leak. Chinese coils are awful.

Coil packs are expensive! I had to replace one 3 years ago (30 000 km only!) when a hole wore through the side of the rubber, causing the spark to short on the block. As they were pricey, I found an alternate make (can't remember the brand off hand). Anyway, this week the car started cutting out randomly. Would start instantly and then cut out 2 seconds after starting. Had to repeat this about 20 times before it started and stayed on. Drove the car to the dealer, they said diagnostics picked up errors on 3 (A, B and C) of the 4 packs. Apparantly my non-factory issue coil caused the damage, and somehow damaged another 2? I don't see how this is possible though? Don't they all work independently? And wouldn't the car have started losing cylinders, rather than completely cutting out? Car is still there at the moment as I'm not convinced changing the coils packs will make the difference? Mechanic couldn't really explain why this would have happened. Just doesn't add up for me?

They very rarely fail and when they do it's usual one or a couple so figure out how many you need and then order. If you suspect a ignition coil try swapping it with another one beside to see if the problem moves with the suspect coil. |

Beck/Arnley is Chinese made junk. I had two in a row fail within days of installation. I retuned them to Pep Boys and then got the Denso from a Napa? The parts guy at Pep Boys said a lot of the Beck/Arnley parts come back.
