Thumbs up Just got over the 47 mpg hump!

Finally managed to break into 47 mpg territory-fuelled up yesterday and calculated 47.3 mpg. This with a 2009 5 dr LB with Auto. I live in fairly hilly terrain and most trips are 2- 15 miles with mixed rural/intown/city driving.

This car has had nothing but Shell E10 since the dealer tank. An Autometer Ecometer is used. Stock Bridgestone RE92 @ 55-60 psi, racing disc wheel covers, and block heater use for temps below 45 F. The ecometer probably made the single biggest gain with air pressure being second.

I'm pretty pumped with these numbers because it's challenging to get great numbers in short trips with the Auto due to the 4th gear lock out until the engine is warmed up. Many thanks to the hypermilers here for sharing your tips. They have been a huge help!

wOOt!

R2D2: I was looking at your Fuelly Log... your recent Fuel-ups Chart very consistant... rising!! I noticed in your fill notes you mentioned Shell 1oz and 2oz? I know the other numbers being octane. What do you mean by 1oz or 2oz?

Cheers!

STC,

That refers to the amount of additive I add at fuel up.

Cold weather is rapidly approaching so unfortunately the 'ol trend will start down again. Hopefully I can stay 40+ this winter though.

Thanks for the support!

What type of additive are you using? Specific name and such, if you dont mind and reason for trying it.?!

I have the exact same model and am jealous of that mpg. I'm sure my wheels aren't helping.

I hit 43mpg on a long road trip in 50/50 mix of hilly and flat terrain on a hot summer day. Same specs.

Not too hard to do if you remind yourself to keep your foot out of it!

chrisj:

You're probably losing 4-5mpg for those wheels. Remember, the difference between 40mpg to 50mpg is a tenth of a gallon, and at that point, everything counts!

Is this like STA-BIL Fuel Stabilizer additive? Suppose to fight Ethanol-induced water attraction. Or is it a dry gas additive?

Cheers!

I started out using Schaeffer's Neutra to help offset the negative effects of the E10 and help keep things clean. I'm currently using a proprietary multifunction additive that I can not discuss due to an agreement with its creator. That's why it goes unnamed in my fuel log.

I've got an interesting tank going right now. My wife did quite a bit of driving early on this fill and she is no hypermiler! No special driving or tricks this tank and so far after 2/3 of a tank I'm averaging about 41 mpg.

I just bought some STA-BIL Fuel Stabilizer additive. We'll see how things are when I convert over to Ethanol gas and start driving in the coming PA Winter months?

Cheers!

I've had no problems with the E10 fuel thus far (knock on wood) but I've seen others with frozen fuel lines and it really has people stirred up with 2 stroke engines. I feel better having something in the gas to help out. Thus far no problems to report but everone I've talked to noticed an FE hit with E 10.

There is definitely a fe hit with e10. I think it is the entire difference between the mileage we are getting now in the Yaris, and what people use to get in the Echo.
