Question How to adjust the handbreak on a 2008 Yaris YRS Sedan MY09

Sorry if this has been asked before, I just wonder how I could adjust the handbreak on my YRS 2008 Yaris sedan MY09, and what tools I need.

Thanks in anticipation.

Hello and welcome to the forums (I'm just accross the ditch in NewZealand)

The yaris repair manual should be of great help:

You adjust the hand brake cable tension by removing the middle console to access where the cable bolts in to the bottom of the hand brake. You either tighten or loosen the bolts and this will adjust tension.

I have never adjusted that part, what I've done instead is as my rear brake wears down I will manually adjust the star ratchet adjustment that determines the width of the brake shoes in the rear wheels. This is supposed to be automatically done when you brake while going in reverse but I don't feel mine works properly so whenever I remove the rear wheels for inspection (~6months) I manually adjust it if my wheel is spinning too easily or if my brake lever has to go more than 2 clicks to engage.

The star ratchet that adjusts the brake shoes shouldn't be adjusted more than a couple clicks each time, if you go too far you won't get your drum back on and it becomes much harder to turn the ratchet the other way without disassembling the shoes.

This job is a piece of cake. Remove the console and you will see the adjusting nut under the park brake lever. Tighten it up until you are happy.

I did this recently, and if a recall, the whole job of removing the console and doing the adjustment can be done with a small flat screwdriver and a 10mm socket and 10mm wrench.

My handbrake was loose, so i adjusted it, my car is second hand. There is however a problem, i am missing the 10mm nut that locks the adjuster in place! I don't feel safe parking my car knowing that it could potentially come loose. Does anyone know what is the "spec" of my missing nut so that i can replace it ?

you should adjust the drums first; before adjusting the center console bolts. I've never adjusted center console bolts. the only reason is if the cable has been stretched. the drums need periodic adjustments, it usually repairs the issues.
