Alternator - Toyota Yaris Forums

My 2006 Yaris has about 63,000 miles on it, and recently started making a rattling, metal on metal kind of sound, faint at first but now quite loud. My mechanic neighbor has diagnosed it as the alternator, as did my spouse before the neighbor even looked. I am wondering how common it is for this to happen? Anyone? I've not had any problems at all until now.

I haven't heard of any issues. In fact, the member here that now has over 355,000 miles on his '07 only had to replace his at 323,000 miles and even then it wasn't completely dead.

Take the drive belt off and run the engine BRIEFLY. See if the noise goes away. TUrn the alternator by hand and see if the pulley is loose or binds.

The alternator on my daughter's 2001 Echo started making bad noise at a little over 100,000 miles. The back bearing went out and the armature was hitting the frame inside. I ended up replacing it with a rebuilt alternator. Stuff like that happens.

Does anyone know if there is an aftermarket part available for the Yaris alternator? I've found a site called automotix, but can't tell if it's legit. the prices are significantly less than toyota's prices.
