Shifting points?

I noticed I had achieved 36 mpg without using ethanol, and my next tank was 33 mpg without ethanol. I'm thinking I should probably shift at 2k RPM's versus the 3k that I am much more naturally inclined to do? What do you guys think? It's not as fun shifting at 2k. But if it makes 3 mpg difference, maybe I'll have to get used to that.

The shift point is totally dependant on how fast you want to accelerate and how much load you're putting on the engine.

If you pull away lightly you can shift as low as 1500 rpm. I can easily cruse at lower speeds with the engine never getting above 1500.

I'm always on a rush to work, brisk acceleration, shift at 2500rpm mostly.

Like bluevitz says, shifting is dependant on acceleration, speed and incline.

Shifting at 3K is way high. If you are looking to achieve more desirable mpgs, then a change of driving habits is definitely in order. Experiment. Shifting at 1500, especially into gears 3+, under no stress conditions is doable.

^+1 especially with the dc header since it moves the power band down a bit.

I used to shift at around 2,000 in the low and 1500-1800 in the higher gears. I was getting about 5.4l/100km regularily with a some city driving and some traffic here and there.

Eventually i learned how much fun a yaris is to drive at 3,000 and especially 6,000 rpm, now I get about 6-6.5l/100km :) still cheap and now more fun!

I generally engage 1st gear at around 1200-1500 RPM when starting from stop, shift to 2nd as soon as car is rolling halfway decently, and then 3rd+ in the 2000-2900 RPM range - depending on circumstances.

When I want/need to get up-to-speed ASAP then I will shift 2nd+ in the 3000-3600 RPM range. I've been averaging 38-MPG since getting my m/t Yaris SE about 7 weeks ago (95% city/town driving).

Anticipating when you will need to stop/slow ahead and mostly "coasting" while you wait for the light-switch or whatever is also a great way to increase MPG a bit, as well as saving wear-and-tear on the clutch and brakes. I routinely do that with street lights, off-ramps from highway, etc. Defensive driving FTW!
