Loose wire by fuel filler tube/neck.

Hi Guys, just had a tyre changed and whilst up on jack I noticed an unconnected wire. It is a single black wire, not in a pair, with a small female connector crimped on, not a blade one but round, approx 1mm diameter. Nothing obvious for it to connect to, no empty spade. Sits in a crease down the back of the filler neck. I wonder if it is a static earth? My car is a diesel so I don't have a Haynes or other manual to help. Can anyone help with this please. Thanks guys.

I just looked through all of the documentation that I have on the diesel and couldn't find anything showing a wire by the filler neck. Our gasoline ones don't have any wiring there.

Is yours a 1st or 2nd generation Yaris?

04 didn't have TPMS.

If it's a 5 door, it could possibly be the wire going to the door courtesy switch for the rear door, as that is a small single conductor wire. In that case though, the dome light would stay on, and the door open indicator would be on on the cluster.

Thanx both.
AS CT syas mine does not have TPMS.
Won't be a rear dooe courtesy either as its length is only that of half way down the filler neck, stops where the tank joins tube by bolted bracket. No warning lights are on either. All very odd. Doesn't look like any aftermarket addition.

Can you post a picture? That might help in tracking down what it is.

Here are 2 pics. You can see the size of wire against my finger size. Thanks.

Could you back up a bit and take a photo of it from a distance - where the wire is entering the fuel filler area? It's not the wire to open the filler door from inside the car is it?

I was wondering that as well. The way that the end is fused onto it makes it look more like a mechanical cable than an electrical one.

Thanx guys, the filler cover still opens & closes easily as usual so I do not think it is that. It was my first thought too.

Tried some more pics but to be honest they did not show up anything more than the others. It is a bit tight in teh filler area. When you see the wire in real life it still looks like a single electrical wire with a female connection. The only possible places it could connect would be on bare metal, on the tube clamp. Is there a static earth to the filler? Not sure why though as filler tube is plastic.

I'm stumped, as there's no ground shown in the EWDs anyplace near there.

I just looked at the EPC to see if it showed a harness that for some reason the EWDs lack, but it didn't. Here's the 04 diesel's fuel fill as shown by the EPC:

Yes, I had seen that diagram, no sign of the wire. I may just have a rogue wire sitting there. I'll put a voltmeter on it see if it shows anything, or also for continuity. Thanks for taking the time to help. Regards, Chris.

is it frozen? (in Nova Scotia, that can easily happen in winter)

if there is no tension whatsoever on the release, then it could be a broken cable, if there is tension, then it's probably just stuck.

Have somebody pull up on the release (or prop it up so it's fully extended) and then using a small flat head screwdriver try to pry the door open.
*** make sure you wrap the long part of the screwdriver in cloth or something soft so you don't destroy your paint and cover the end of it as well. don't pry too hard either***

hopefully it opens and you can either clean it, or replace it - be warned though it may not close again after opening it if it's a mechanical issue.
