HELP WITH BRAKE NOISE
My 2007 Yaris has 40,000 miles. I would say 75 percent highway. When I brake, no problem. After I release the brake, I get a pretty loud squeak from the rear driver side(USA). Any thoughts on this-Thanks!

Drums probably need to be cleaned out. Mine does this. But IDC.

I am having maybe the same sound, and I am too wondering what it is... I posted a sound of the file at https://public.me.com/n9qgs click on brake.mov
I am open to suggestions... Its loud enough you hear it no matter how slow you release the brake and you can hear it within 10-15 feet easily of the car. thanks, Ron |

Cleaning out the drum with brake cleaner spray, then lubricate with white lithium grease on the side of moving parts (NOT on the brake shoe surface itself), wont hurt anyway. The brake.mov sounds like just a dry spring or something less serious. Search on youtube for how to replace the shoe, or how to adjust star wheel. Just do the same routine without replacing the part. It is very easy.
edit: the shoe is likely touching against the backing plate behind your drums... put a dash of lithium grease right between where it touches (without getting any one the pad material itself). It is commonly done as part of installing shoes, thus the above suggestion that you focus your search on DIY drum brake maintenance. Do not pay a dealership to fix this -- they may go off on a ghost hunt on your credit card. |
