CAI and Sports Muffler

Has anyone done a DIY example of installing (with pics) of the TRD Cold
Air Intake and/or the Sports Muffler? My dealer wants $1050 for the
parts installed. That seems a little steep.

It only takes 30min (dragging ass) to un-install the muffler and maybe 45 min for the CAI. $249.95 for the CAI and $324.95. So $574.90 will get you covered with just a little bit of knowledge, so just go to the dealership and kick them in the NUTS!!!

ps. Those are prices on the AEM CAI and TAnabe Medallion exhaust

Yup. That’s what I came up with too - about 500 bucks labor for the
install! Me, well I can’t even change a light bulb. Seriously, this is WAY
over my head - BUT my brother-in-law can do it. He would like to see
some photos of someone doing the install for the CAI first. We’re pretty
sure he can do the muffler - in his sleep.

The exhaust took me maybe 10 minutes - half of that was going and putting some water in a spray bottle to lubricate the rubber pipe hangers so they'd slip off.

The AEM CAI comes with the most complete and easy to follow directions I've ever seen for anything. It had photographs of each step. It was easy and fun to install. The hardest part was getting up inside the fender well to install the air filter element.

The dealer is a ripoff.

Don't really need a DIY write up for these two parts, there are instructions for both pieces you wish to install and they are very thorough and easy to follow.

Thanks for the advice, I’ll show him this thread. I’m sure he could do it
even with no directions. He has done a few frame-off rebuilds on cars
and motorcycles. He is currently in the process of doing a 1968 all
custom Corvette, but he is old school and is intimidated by these
new engines with computer chips and all that.

So you all use an AEM and not the TRD CAI? I know I’ve read
this somewhere here but what does AEM stand for? Or more precisely
where can I get the part? Thanks again for the help.

Ha-ha thanks for the offer, but I wouldn’t want to subject you to
my little hillbilly town. You would be scared.

AEM = Advanced Engine Management

The AEM CAI system does not include a bypass valve, whereas the TRD does.
You can add a bypass valve to the AEM CAI, which involves some cutting of the piping.

Personally I think the bypass valve is not necessary because the filter element is in a location that is shielded from moisture.

I shot this video clip from inside and outside the vehicle to give you some idea of the sound both will give you. My car is better insulated than stock.

Damn that sounds good Violin.

I just got my TRD exhaust today. Will report back once it's installed.
