I wish there was a stock heavy duty steel front bumper we could attach to the yaris. Its too suspect to damage to the front. I might have to weld some steel bars to the front of my yaris.

Y'know, crumple zones suck. You hit doing 10 mph (estimated), and look how much damage it caused. Do you really think that crumple crap is going to provide any protection against a REAL impact? Not likely. I'm pretty convinced that crumple zones were developed more for gas mileage reasons and dealership profit on replacement parts + labor, not so much for safety. It's marketing hype man, marketing hype so we all feel safer in our flimsy cans! Had you been in a mid-70's car, you'd probably have both driven away with a little scuff and nothing more.

Someone told me I can disable ABS on the fuse box. I am not even going to attempt to try. I think my best bet is to get to know my Yaris' brakes better by doing some testing once I get that thing back and driving a little safer.
Wouldn't ABS be better if it were programmed to detect an attempted steering maneuver while braking? That way if we are braking straight on it could clamp harder whereas in attempting a maneuver it could pump? Crumple zones would be great if everyone on the road had a sponge mobile. Sure saves money on gas and lessens the blow in an accident... But it sure was humbling waiting for the police to come as people passed by looking at my wrecked Yaris and the not even dented Towncar. |

i agree that ABS can get in the way. in winter driving in particular i'd try and gently hold them down to slow my roll, something I know I can do in a non-ABS car, only to find the ABS kicking in way before i wanted it to. however, i just got used to downshifting (automatic) in those situations to get what i wanted out of the scenario.

This will be more of a "perspective" post.
randog, I'm sorry to hear of what happened and how much damage your car seemed to take I'm glad nobody was injured. You're dealing w/some additional stress right now, but stick it out, you'll be all fixed up soon enough The way I see it, you have the right attitude. It's not easy to admit having made a mistake - some ppl never do - but you acknowledge it, and you'll learn. It'll be expensive, and it sucks, but I've made a few expensive mistakes in the past too (I can think of a few doozies back when I was heavily in student debt). No, they weren't too fun, but I learned some valuable lessons from them. I'll bet that most ppl, if they're honest enough, will admit the same. Anyways, I'm looking forward to seeing some pics of your newly restored Yaris soon |
