I thought about the coasting bit, so for my next tank I'm gonna aim for a high mpg goal.
The car yearns for speed? Thanks for the laugh mate. Go drive a performance car, then feel speed. This car yearns for F.E. It handles like a pig on rollerskates, and if you have a L.B. , looks like one too.

Yea, lol... this is by no means a speed demon...

DFCO stands for deceleration fuel cut off. Go look for the sticky by BailOut for fuel economy tips -- and a full explanation on DFCO. (Bassically it's when you coast... but you use zero fuel.)

Third tank in a row @ 43mpg. Running avg is almost 42 now!

This tank, as a challenge from my skeptic spouse, I'm driving "normal". No hypermiling at all. Idling whenever for however long, no shutting off at the long lights, no intentional DFCO, driving speed limit (or 5 above), maintain speed up hills...the whole shebang. She thinks it will work out the same. What do you guys say? Should I bet her money?

I've gone about 2K miles and my average is 41.38 but my highest was 44.95...and I don't consider myself an intense hypermiler. I don't shut my car off at lights and I don't use DFCO as often as others. I find that the momentum generated rather than engine braking is more valuable...unless I'm stopping/slowing down anyway.

One tip I forgot to mention, even though others have...

I NEVER EVER buy gas that has ethanol in it!

cost of ethanol gas should be cheaper.... in fact.... if anything.... ethanol gas should be cheaper to run than normal gas.

ethanol gas is "SUPPOSE" to be 8 cents a gallon cheaper...but the mpg losses can be as high as 10% in some studies. So ethanol in your gas is not cheaper, plus it makes your food prices go up.

Nothing like supporting artificially subsidized government means of starving third world countries.

Do not forget that the ONLY reason ethanol lowers the price is because the government SUBSIDIZES ethanol. IOW, the per BTU price of ethanol is way higher than gasoline, but because it is "renewable" the government subsidizes it's production quite substantially, resulting in an ARTIFICIAL reduction in cost. The REAL COST of ethanol in America is substantially higher per BTU than gasoline. You pay for it in your taxes and in international trade rather than at the pump, but you DO pay for it.

A BTU is a BTU.

52 mpg

I do lots of freeway driving with a packed car in the mountains, and I averaged 52 mpg over 2 days of driving to Montana. I usually average about 48 mpg. I love my car :) It's a manual transmission, I think that has a lot to do with it. I have so much more control over my car.

52 ?! Congrats...don't let brian see that...he'll come in and ask for your raw data and say it doesn't count unless you have your numbers to two decimal places and used at least a half of a tank (blah blah blah). He'll also inform you that he currently has about a million records for the yaris and he would be very interested if anyone actually beat him.
