Reverse gear crunch

I'm not sure if this is normal but here is my scenario.

If I push the clutch in and shift into reverse gear right away I get a crunch of the gears.

If I push the clutch in and wait a couple of seconds and then shift into reverse there is no gear crunch.

This only happens when I shift into reverse gear rather quickly after pushing the clutch in, so as a result I have made it a habit to push the clutch in and wait a couple of seconds and then shift into reverse.

The reason I am asking is that my other vehicle that is a 5spd (not a Toyota) does not do this no matter how quickly after depressing the clutch pedal I shift into reverse.

Does this occur because the syncros need a few seconds to line up?

yeah pretty much... What I read before, I think it was originally toyota's recommendation, go into 1st or 4th gear first (at a stop), then into reverse, this will align the synchros best.

Word on the street is that the reverse gear on the Yaris is square. Never personally had it cracked ope though^_-

Ok thanks guys! If its normal thats fine, I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't a sign of potential transmission problems down the road.

The Yaris gearbox has a straight cut, unsynchronized reverse gear. Which explains the gear whine moving in reverse and the problem with getting the gear shift into reverse. The gearbox was designed in the mid 1990's before transmission makers like Getrag were adding a synchronized reverse to their gearboxes.
