On the street, yes it's great. Drag racing, probably not.

I'll try it out both ways on Thursday. Looks like we have a few people coming out.

I can't recall what the RPM is at 70 with a stock final drive?

Changing the 5th gear ratio from 0.815 to 0.725 puts the 70 mph RPM right around 3160. Not great, but closer to stock. The 5th gear is out of a C59 from an 03-ish Matrix/Vibe/Corolla. That particular C59 also has a 3.941 final drive, which is a little bit more aggressive without going whole hog. The thing that sucks about the C59 is that they normally run about $1.2k rebuilt, $600 broken.

Ok, made some progress on my gear swap project. A C56 can indeed be torn down without the Toyota SST kit.

Important tools to have (or at least what I used):

* Bolt puller set
* Bearing separator set
* 3/8" drive breaker bar
* deadblow hammer

Replacing the bearings will require a few other automotive tools, but I haven't messed with that yet. Putting it back together is a very different story and will require access to a hydraulic press and either a very precise torque wrench (0-15 in-lb) or knowledge of the mechanics/physics/calculus to make a widget that will verify the pre-load torque on the differential.

I think Art used a 2-ton press. About $150 from Harbor Freight.

The guy I helped change the gears(he busted one on an xB) just got a press from Harbor Freight like Garm said.It was not easy,but it was cold and rainy and I had never taken apart a tranny before like this so I was just the helper.No need for special tools short of bearing separator and bolt outs,other than that is basic tools

I prefer to keep all three decimal places to avoid confusion with similar ratios available on variants of the C5* line. Yes, I've spent entirely too much time researching this. =)

Yaris (non Vitz RS) C50:
1st 3.545:1
2nd 1.904:1
3rd 1.310:1
4th 0.969:1
5th 0.815:1
Final 3.722:1

Vitz RS C56 close ratio:
1st 3.166:1
2nd 1.904:1
3rd 1.392:1
4th 1.301:1
5th 0.815:1
Final 4.312:1

My dream Frankensaxle:
1st 3.166:1
2nd 1.904:1
3rd 1.392:1
4th 1.031:1
5th 0.725:1
Final 4.312:1

Why go through the trouble? Well, because I hate getting stuck below the power band in second gear. The redline speed of 1st is very close to the stock, but because of the taller ratio the drop is only about 2400 rpm to second--instead of 2900. A rev-limit shift would in theory land you just over 4k, right in the sweet spot of the stock/NA torque curve. The internal ratio of 2nd is the same for all C5* series gearboxes, and the drive gear is integrated into the input shaft. Can't change it without customizing the whole shaft. The benefit here is from the shorter final drive ratio, as well as the shorter ratios in 3rd/4th. Sure, you give up a ton of theoretical top end speed, but if you don't ever plan on driving over 100mph, you'll never know it's gone.

The super-tall overdrive ratio in 5th is to compensate for highway cruising. When driving like I stole it, I don't get up into 5th anyway.

Anyway, really looking forward to see how this mod changes your corner exit speeds!
And Garm has found yet another option: http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/sho...&postcount=898

It wont be "freeway friendly", but damn, it will get you there in a hurry.

4.0 = the early < '03 C59 3.941:1? If so, that's from a 1st gen Matrix (I think).

4.5:1 = ??

There's also a TRD 4.733:1 from the Starlet/Truino that may or may not fit.

So, did you try this out on a dragstrip? What was your E.T? How much did you trim off of your previous best time?

I swapped the xB final drive only, not the gear sets. Jason is putting the gear sets into their road course race cars, that's not drag racing.

I got 2 passes and broke my clutch 3 weeks ago. I'm going again on Thursday night this week. Hope to have some good results.
