smokey 1.4 D - only 52K miles

hi all

I've just bought a Yaris diesel on 52K miles. It produces white smoke if you give it welly but otherwise runs sweetly and quietly. Is this normal for a 52K car? I rummaged back through it's history and at only 5K miles someone put petrol in it. Also at 42K miles it failed its yearly exhaust emissions test. I believe this was rectified using some sort of fuel cleaner or something. Any ideas what could be wrong?

Also it tends to wander and it is annoying having to constantly keep it in a straight line.

Since it's a diesel engine, it might be an injector issue. One of them might be dirty. Buy a bottle of diesel injector cleaner. Do this for 1 or 2 tanks and see if it clears up.

Only reason why I'm suggesting this is that you said your car runs fine but only get white smoke when you give it welly.

The wandering is an alignment issue. Get your car an alignment as soon as possible.

Good luck and congratulations on the purchase!

hi Freedan

Cheers, I'll try that, thanks.

Tonight I did 25 miles on approx 1.5 litres. I think this equates to about 75 mpg!
Not bad at all, especially since it was a mix or urban and motorway driving.

Apparently the 1.4 D will do 85mpg when driven like a vicar on the motorway.

I have to say the engine seems tiny and very quiet, but it pulls well even in 5th gear. Impressive.

What do these words in bold mean? (They don't exist in America)

I'll assume "motorway" means "highway"? Then again, the literal meaning could mean any street that a vehicle drives on.

I'll translate:

Apparently the 1.4 D will do 85mpg when driven frugally on the highway.
