Need some advice about air filters

Hi all. Yesterday I purchased a 09 Yaris and need some advice about replacing the air filter to increase performance. I heard a lot about K&N but I don't know much about different types of filters they have. I am not interested in a CAI though, just filter. Any advice on which brand/type would be the best choice will be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You'll not really experience any appreciable difference in performance by going with fancy brand drop in filters. Just stick with Fram.

That's debatable and "illegal".

Only way to truly know if removing it makes a difference is to shell out the cash for a couple pulls on the dyno. Your butt dyno will say there is a difference but the butt dyno is often psychological.

The K&N website will show a dyno run with a few extra HP. I'm thinking about an aFe because I want to. I'm trying to find an intake manifold as well, together it might (stickers and all) add 12 - 15 HP. Do what you want because you want to, because it makes you happy. Just don't think bolting something on other than a supercharger or turbo will add 50+ HP. That leads to the RICE side ^.^

Best of luck.

I use a K&N drop in because I don't like buying a new one every maintenance period.

Thanks for your input Turk188. I honestly am not expecting a huge difference in performance. Since I just bought this car, I haven't checked the condition on the filter yet. I was going to change it anyway but thought there might be something available out there that could improve performance a bit more that a regular AF. I thought about it because in one of my previous cars, someone suggested a K&N HighFlow filter. That made not a big difference but some noticeable difference. Thought some like that was available for Yaris also but apparently not.

Any HP gain because of a high performance air filter has got to be purely imaginary. Just stick with whatever set of engine and cabin air filter you can get for cheap on eBay or Amazon and change them a couple of times a year.

Oh they are out there:
http://afepower.com/afe-power-54-113...-intake-system

http://www.knfilters.com/mobile/mPro...uct=69-8612TFK

I am no expert, others can tell you better, but the 1nz-fe engine has changed very little. Also, but I advise caution, there are parts from other cars that will fit (the 2006 scion xb came with the same engine and even some suspension parts will fit).

My point is, it's yours do what makes you happy.
Cheers!

This is what I'm running made of 3 intakes lol with a dry flow filter and cover.
Sounds cool easy to clean plus I do find car little more responsive.

Not what OP is referring to. Yes, those and many other CAI and SRI systems are out there, along with drop in filter offerings from the likes of K&N and AFE.

Lets try to keep it simple here and address the OPs desire to only deal with drop in filters.

As for the xb having the same engine, yes it does. However, the intake configuration is totally different.

So i went to my local toyota and got the company AF. Honestly i dont think i feel any difference in performance. There might be some because the old one was pretty dirty.

You won't notice any gains in power from a drop-in filter. You could even remove the filter (less air restriction more air flow!!!) and still won't gain any appreciable gains in power. Replace it if it's dirty but don't expect more power.

This can be debated forever. I have modified over 18 different cars and let me tell you. Putting one of those short ram, cone filter intakes is not worth the money. Price per horsepower, you could put that money into a exhaust mod to free up some flow. Just a fun fact. On all the newer cars I've modified, with a stock tune, putting an aftermarket intake hurt performance. I think a stock air box with a K&N filter and making a smoother transitioning tube would be the best option considering how cheap the things car.
