hubcaps falling off?
Hey all! Noticed the other day that both my right-side wheel covers were missing. I just assumed they were stolen (who steals yaris wheel covers??), but then I have been noticing many Yari with one or two missing wheel covers, including a friend's sedan. Do these have a tendency to fall off on their own? I mean, it takes a good tug to get them off, but I'm wondering if a good pothole or something is enough to make me lose them?

I believe it can happen. If, for example you hit the curb, you might notice the outer side of the hubcap, that's away from the curb, sticking out a bit. Add some highway driving to that and the hubcap might fall off because of centrifugal force.
Interestingly enough I've seen a lot of taxi drivers zip-tieing their hubcaps to the wheels specifically to prevent that from happening.

i gradually lost tabs on the hub caps from getting taken off and put back on. eventually they stopped holding onto the steelie. I fixed the problem with rims. wee.

I noticed the majority of cars zip-tie the hubcaps in Quebec.

Toyota has a problem with hubcaps falling off here in Quebec, i use zip ties..

I think there are a number of factors causing the problem. In my youth most cars didn't come with full wheel covers.I.E just around the lug nuts. My 92 Civic came with center caps only and painted. Back then full wheel covers came on luxury autos only, which presumed the owner could afford to replace them every year or so.
I agree that the plastic ones are a joke. Three of the four broke off the plastic tabs by the third tire rotation. Once a few a couple of tabs break they start falling off. I makes the decision to spring for beauty rings or alloy wheels a no brainer. Just make sure they support TPMS if you MY has TPMS. |

The '09 Yari wheel covers were not only less good-looking than those that were on the '08, the '09 covers weren't made as well either and were/are prone to falling off the wheels. There's even a You Tube vid addressing this ... get a set of '08 covers ... they look much better anyhow.

Or... get some nice trim rings and chrome lugs. They look so much better than the plastic hubcaps!

^ I LIKE small center hub caps on the car above. Are these readily available? Perhaps they are just caps for a utility trailer?

Curious how those with the zip ties are doing it. Is it wrapping through the wheel holes and then around a spoke on the hubcap? Any pictures?
