Alternator removal P1 '99

Hi,
I'm asking this for a friend of mine:
Does someone know how to get the alternator off the engine?

Assumed, but a very good point that it must be done before disconnecting the alternator, or one is sure to pop the ALT fusible link.

does it? alternator does nothing when it's not spinning.

^exactly. The alternator feeds the battery via that cable, so when the alternator is not running that wire is a main line to the battery with a 100A fuse.

the heavy red wire that attach's to the single stud on the alternator with the plastic cap is always "hot" if the ignition is on or not (alternator spinning or not) so it is best to disconnect the battery.

speaking of disconnecting the battery... i often hit the negative pole of the battery with my tool when undoing the positive pole.

I should use a shorter wrench

are you asking us or telling us? The negative of the battery is hooked up to the car's chassis so any time you are removing the (+) plus side of the battery you could short it out if you touch or hit the end of the wrench to any part of the car's chassis.

Are you bragging or complaining?

Seriously, though, always remove the positive battery connection first and replace it last. And yes, you should use a shorter wrench.

Actually just the opposite - Always disconnect the negative terminal first and connect the negative last. The reason for this is that the chassis is grounded, so if while wrenching the positive terminal you touch anything metal you will short the positive to ground and make a heck of a spark or do worse that that.

When jumping a car you do just the opposite - Connect positive first and disconnect it last.
