Cup- holder removal..?

Dumb question (maybe....):
How the heck does one remove the cup-holders at each
end of the dash? Something sticky was spilled in one of
mine at some point, and it sure would be easier to clean
if the part that pivots open could be removed...
thx

I would also like to know ** It was the only thing stopping me from removing my dash 'cause the front piece would just clip loose but I couldn't get it out and once I started damaging the plastic I stopped..

You can remove them by squeezing the sides however be careful as thwre are small springs that can shoot out on you. Pay close attention while you do it so that you know how to put the springs back in plac.e the springs are what control the slow opening and make the "tap" open function work.

Hmm. Mine don't seem to have a slow-opening or tap open function- basically you just pull them open and push 'em closed. The sides seem to have vertical downward facing 'hooks' in the plastic at the back that catch and stop the holder from opening more than it should. Seems like those need to be 'lifed' to get over the catch, but damned if I can get them to clear (afraid something's going to snap if I put too much force into it....).

Sedan and Liftbacks have completely different cup holder assemblies. For the liftback, the cup holder is mounted to the inside of the dash top with a screw, so you have to remove the dash top to remove them.

Given what CTScott posted about having to remove the top of the dash to properly unscrew the holder mounting.....perhaps buy a new toothbrush...brush the inside with water or some type of cleaner....wipe with a hand wipe (the ones sold in cylinders to keep in cars).....dry with a paper towel....then throw the toothbrush, etc. away.

Yeah, basically what I already did (I save old t-brushes for just such things), but
there's still some stickiness that offends my obsessive-compulsive sensibilities! I think I'll just struggle to ignore/live with it until I have another reason to take the dash to off!
