I'm a Mayflower and Jamestown descendent as well as a fifth-generation native of a deeply blue state (California) on the other side of the continent from the founding of our nation. I've always loved learning more about U.S. History. I don't think I fully appreciated our constitution, nor the full measure of patriotism, until I moved to Texas. This is one reason why it saddens me to see any of this crumble. If you lived in Texas, Alabama, or any state with similar views to those expressed on this thread, you might better understand. Then again, you might not understand without being a U.S. citizen. I used to (prior to moving to Texas) have an attitude (re firearms) similar to the one exuded in your post. My uncle is the only hunter in my family. Other family members look at his perspective on guns/rifles, etc. as a neanderthal view to be tolerated as he is given figurative pats on the head. Nevermind that he has a genius level IQ, and is the wealthiest person in our family. Perhaps he realized long ago a few things (re firearms and what they truly represent) that the rest of us did not.

I think that if you look at the crime rate and the equivalent gun laws, You'd be shocked.
It is the same with drugs and anything else illegal, Once you outlaw it, Everyone wants it. Where if it's legal, It's not as likely to be abused and cause massive crimes. Just think about how it was so much fun to underage drink? Not the same now is it? People always want what they "Can't" have.
