Used '08 Yaris : Would you buy it if the oil was changed once a year
at 4 > 5,000 mile intervals ? Would assume this to be conventional engine oil . The car has less than 30,000 miles .

Who's the owner...a teen that could care less or someone who looks like they cared some what for their car? 30k on the engine is nothing really.
I might bite if the circumstances were right.

Not a problem. My son changed his oil maybe twice a year and drove a lot more than 10k a year. Also, many was the time he came over for a visit and I checked the oil and tire pressure and found 15 psi in the tires and no oil on the dipstick! Yes he had a few tires blow up on the freeway but the engine still runs in Costa Rica with 200k on it...

depending on when they bought it, they have been driving roughly 5000 miles/yr. if there were a lot of in town miles and the car spent a lot of time idling, I wouldn't be that crazy about once a year changes. |

I change my synthetic oil at 10,000 mile intervals regardless of time. oil does not "spoil".

I also change my oil about once per year(filter twice). In my case thats about 20k miles, but it's still yellow at the change period. I've been a Redline/Mobil1 fan for years, but I'm thinking of going to the newer Pennzoil synthetic, as it's distilled from natural gas. I've read articles over the last 20 years, that claims synthetic oils distilled from natural gas make for a very good base stock, some of the articles stated equal to a group 5 stock. Nice to see it at an affordable level, thank you Pennzoil. Now if Mobil1 could catch up, I won't need to switch brands.:roll eyes: And yes! I would buy a Yaris with 30K miles, even if the PO never changed the oil. It's a Toyota, Oil changes are just for fun! :big grin:

I would remove the oil filler cap and see how clean it looks. Preferably remove the valve/cam head and check sludge and cleanliness. But if it was maintained by someone who cares for it and the price was right then yes.
