If you plan on patching a tire on the sidewall...don't. It is the weakest part of the tire when damaged. The kind of plug that a normal consumer can buy easily is the worst possible kind as well. It forces you to stretch the hole past the size it already is and severely damages the nylon cords and steel belts. My recommendation would be to replace the tire, as a tire plugged in the sidewall is at a much greater risk of a blow-out. I also want you to know this is not just my opinion with no facts to back it up. I was a tire tech for four years at Discount Tire, Tires Plus, and NTB/Tire Kingdom. If I seem like a dick, my bad. I just don't want anyone to get hurt.

I've had plugs in the middle of the tread work well for years, but they can suddenly start leaking again when you've forgotten about them. You can't plug in sidewalls, and if it's in the outside rib of the tread it's a bad idea. If you've got to fix a puncture, a patch on the inside's better than a plug, and replacing the tire's always best of course. Sometimes you've just got to get going again quickly and on the cheap, so I always keep a plug kit handy.
