Unhappy 2007 Toyota Yaris sputtering

Hi Everyone,

I have just bought a used 2007 yaris with 105kms on it, and its an automatic. My problem lies when I first begin to accelerate after coming from Park. The car seems to sputter. This is a video on youtube of a differnt car but it does the exact same thing:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ki2H9aq8Xis

I didnt really think anything of it, until I went to my local tim hortons and when I started the car, it started fine then it immediately died with the battery light coming on. It died at least 4 times in a row... the only way I was able to stop it from dieing was I put it in reverse and slowly coasted out of my parking spot then I put it in drive and away I went. I thought it was going to die again once I got to a stop sign.

I would like to point out ive only had this car for 3 days and has no manual with it, I did take it for a test drive before hand and it did not do this. It was also raining like it was today.

I am not mechanic at all, so please be gentle with terminology. I plan on taking it to a mechanic, but I don't really know how to explain this to them or what am I in for...is this a major repair?

Thanks.

Is the battery the original? If it is just buy a new battery, chance are that's your problem. I remember another member having similar issues an it was the battery.

Is there any check engine lights? If these problems are only 3days after your purchase i'd be going back to where you purchased it from and get them to deal with it.

I'm not sure if it's the original battery it was a private buy.
There are no check engine lights on.

If the battery says "Panasonic" on it then it is the original

Where in Canada are you?

I'd check the throttle body. It might need a good cleaning.

Hard to diag from here as there are many things it can be. It's going to be tough for your mechanic unless it acts up for them and they can feel it. Your post has good info for them, but the most important things to let your mechanic know are:
-is the car cold/warm when it happens? First thing in morning, or after driving a long time?
-light acceleration or harder acceleration?
-in Drive or in Park?
-etc

Just explain what you said in your post, and they should have an idea of where to go from there. At least you are trying to explain, where some people just say "my car runs bad" and that's it. It's almost $2/minute to have me looking at their car.... it's cheaper if you explain when/how the car acts up.

Good luck.

The person who posted that video also posted a follow up video. She said it ended up being her fuel pump... Replaced the fuel pump and the car stopped doing it... I dont know how close your symptoms are to the video but if it is identical then their might be a good chance your problem is with the fuel pump...
