Grind, Grind, Grind

Just bought an 07 Yaris with 70K miles, and I just noticed 3rd gear is a little grind'y. It shifts OK, but unless I take it easy, it will grind.


I think it may just be a transmission oil issue, it is a little past time for this to be done. However, worst to worse, it's a bad synchro? How much is this to fix?

Yeah it sounds like it might be a bad syncro.
How much to fix it? Keep in mind that your tranny will have to be removed and taken at least partly apart so, it will not be cheap if that is in indeed the problem.

I think it might just need a fluid change.....


I drove it just now after the car cooled and I can't get it to grind at all. When I test drove it in the winter (it's recently unseasonably warm here) I didn't notice any problems at all. The entire tranny as a whole felt a little different when the car was coler.

I'm going to take it to the Toyota dealer and see whats up. I read in the "3rd Gear Grind" thread that other Yaris owners just needed a fluid change and good as new.

It's a little crunchy in 2nd and even 1st if I'm not paying attention to how I shift. But it goes away when it's cool. It didn't even start until after I was driving the car a little.



Yet and still, let me take it to the dealer and see what they say.

Try full synthetic transmission oil. Some good stuff. Red line something? MT-90

redline is very good and made for synchros but it takes long time for it to settle in and make a difference 1500km now and starting to fell it

synthetic oil did get rid of my grinds on my previous car bare in mind it took at least 3 weeks before it completely went away...dont ask me why?

i agree with the fluid, my 2nd was starting to be a pain and then changed the fluid and i haven't had a problem with it since. Tranny fluid can't last the life of the car.

Yeah, I drove t on a 100 mile trip and it didn't grind once until I got home. It also had warned up 20 degrees outside and I had been driving for awhile.

I own a 2007 Yaris with 93K on it, had a synchro replaced last year at 70K, now it's going again! Is it possible for a synchro to go again THAT SOON?

I have a similar problem if I shift too fast. Also, if I am sitting in neutral and try to put into first real fast or if I am in neutral and try to put into 1st gear while car is moving slow say less than 5 mph it will grind a little. I have 145k on an 07 hatch back. I am worried it may need a clutch or a few of the synchro are getting worn. I drive mostly interstate miles. I am running a synethic blend oil.

So, how much roughly would it cost to get this synchro replaced?

Put your seat a little closer toward the dash this will make it easier to fully depress the clutch when gear changing. Clutch travel on my yaris is some what long at times and yes it does seem to change.

Give this a go. Get redline MT 90 put it in there then wait and see what happens ( sometimes you see instant result, other times it takes weeks to kick in). I wont recommend what i did which is i added Manual Transmission treatment product called Nulon G70 to redline. It is shifting better.




Question: Has anyone used Redline lightweight shock proof? School me on this product.
