salt deposit inside HB

I replace my rear shocks today and noticed that there was a lot of what appeared to be salt and dirt deposited just out side of the shock reinforcement plate. I did notice some evidence that it was coming down the side of the car.
Any idea what it might be?
rear washer fluid?

Was it only on the passenger side (since that is the side where the washer fluid hose runs)?

That is the only side I noticed.

I have noticed some gooey kind of substance on the drivers side tail light cover though as well but feel that is probably unrelated.

I am going to look into this more now that it is warm enough to be outside for a bit. What is the best way to get the whole trim pieces out?

There are some lower screws for the rear one and one recessed screw by the hatch on either side. Once those are out you can pull the panels off.

When I swap my suspension in the spring, I've seen salt deposits on both sides. The rubber on the outside doesn't seal perfectly, so you get quite a bit of accumulation in there.

I've pulled the panel off the driver's side once (to install my trailer wire harness) but I don't remember the procedure. Check the downloads section for a copy of the manual.

I Was working on sound deadening this week and pulled all the panels.
Noticed a hole above the RH shock. It has a sticker on it from the wheel well that was not properly attached anymore.
My solution was to simply place a butyl pad over it to seal it off
