Everything always looks prefect in a picture.

Will be interesting to see if you are now anymore resilient to stone chips. Factory paint chips if you sneeze to close to the vehicle.

It does indeed look better in pictures. Not sure about the paint chips. I used a medium solids acrylic urethane clear coat. It's reasonably thick on the front.

+1 on the great job man! Sorry to hear you ran into some trouble spots, but the photos really make it look like you've done a sharp job - that's gotta be worth at least a 50' job, lol.

As you said, big effort and lots learned - next time you'll be 10 steps ahead; be honest with yourself, you know there will be a next time..

Keep us posted on the fix-ups when you do them, and thanks for sharing the awesome job you've done, it's been enjoyable to follow.

Thanks Adam! I've decided to respray the passenger doors as they are the worst. I'll sand with 600 first and hopefully the clear will sand smooth enough to lay a couple of base coats and 3 clear coats. I have enough material remaining to do that. I will definitely post up the process.

'New' liftgate

Scored a used liftgate for $150.00 today. It will need to be stripped, primed, sanded and painted. Although the clear is flaking off, the liftgate has absolutely no dings or even scrapes. It is 100% rust-free. I think this car was 'decomissioned' very early in its life. I'm going to refinish this off the car and then bolt it on. It came with the factory style spoiler too! Of course I have no use for this as I'll be taking the wing off my old tailgate and putting it on the 'new' one.

If this is the original paint, I'm really getting WeeYari's and Kimona's point that the paint on these cars - at least the clear coat - is a joke. This stuff can't be thicker than a human hair - wow!

The Saga Continues...

Well, I'm definitely getting better at spraying paint. Doing an orientation coat (pulling the gun back and dusting the metallics on immediately after my final med/wet base coat eliminates any mottling and my base coat is super smooth and uniform with the metallic flake all in the same direction. I am learning tons. There are parts of the car that look much better than factory with almost perfect metallics and a deeper, glossier look due to more clear being applied. However, everytime I do some painting something goes wrong. This time, two things...

1) I had sanded the clear coat down with 600 grit to spray the new base coat. In one tiny spot, not realizing, I had sanded slightly through the clear right at the front of the door, lower style line. The base coat immediately wrinkled. I let the base dry, carefully wet sanded it and then laid about 4 dust coats of base with 15 minutes between each. Then, I laid down my final medium/wet coats. This solved the problem. You cannot tell now that there was any wrinkling.

2) My gun must have had some silicone or other contamination. I got many fish eyes. I am hoping to be able to sand these out and then do a quick flow coat of clear in a couple of days.

I am thoroughly enjoying this learning process. I am definitely improving but there is still much to learn and there are so many variables to contend with.

Thanks very much, bradbowl. It's been fun and it's definitely helping me improve my patience.

Let's just go big and call this pass a learning experience and do the whole thing over again when done! That way it'll come out perfectly

Amirite?!

Guys?
I'm going to do the liftgate next. Maybe next summer, I'll respray the whole car, or find another one to do so I can continue to practice.
