Question can someone show me what i need to cover if i am to wash my engine?

i wanted to clean my engine, i dont know much about it, where the distributor cap is or anything. i know im going to cover the alternator. do i need to cover the stock air box? please let me know. my yaris needs a clean engine, its been almost 4 years! general pictures would always be a plus. im just deathly scared of ruining my car.

I think you're being a bit over cautious. I sprayed out my engine bay with a garden hose and spray nozzle last weekend without incident. If you are using a standalone power washer, then I could see there being some potential for getting water in unwanted places. I'm also fairly sure that the ignition is controlled by the ECM (no distributor needed).

Ya gota realize it gets soaked every time it rains. And if you hit a big puddle, well......
Just dont go nuts and spray a full stream into the alternator, etc.
I use simple green all over, let it sit for about 2-3 minutes and rinse. It comes out spotless! Course I do it every 6 months or so...
