Turbo Recommendations

Hey all,

So I've been wanting a bit more pick up from my little 2009 2NZ powered Yaris, and started to consider a turbo build. I live out in the middle of nowhere so not a lot of experts near me on turbos, so I thought I'd ask here.

Through my own bit of research the most popular turbos for the 2NZ/1NZ platform seems to be a Mitsubishi TD04HL-15 (as supplied in the ZAGE kits), a GT1752 (from a SAAB 9-3 or 9-5, thought I've also read of them being called too small) or a Garrett GC17-250 (although, I was hoping to go something on the cheaper throw together end of a project)

I'm not looking to get massive power boosts. I don't really want to tear my engine down or swap it out for a 1NZ (again, I'm out in the middle of nowhere, i"m having trouble finding one for a good price anywhere near me haha), as my little 2NZ is still fairly low k at 64k kms.

If it was up to you all, which would you use? One of those? Or a different turbo?Any other suggestions? I'm also tempted to look for a Blitz SC kit online, but tempted to go for a turbo for something different to my usual cars.

Thanks,
S

imo any "small" turbo will work its a question of modifying the manifold for it, shoot for one off anything smaller the 2.0 idealy anything off a 1.8 if your lookin for the cheep, anything off a larger 2.0+ will result in lag..how much will depend on how big you end up with

while they probably are not the easiest to find these days....the old mistu 2.2-2.5 turbos of the 80s were small and would likely work well in the yaris..but the point is ANY turbo will work, in the end smaller is better

personaly after the cai, injectors, and TB swap the car becomes quite spunky....cant say id add a turbo before doing that stuff

The turbo would be your last thing to worry about, sort out ecu+ wiring and mapping out especially if you are in the middle of nowhere.

I run a 1752 turbo on my turbo tercel currently. I think it works really well. I had a gt2554R turbo last year and it was good but for what I primarily do with my car which is autocross the 1752 is a really good match.

I am running a "GT2048" turbo on my 1NZ Yaris at 8 psi and it is a lot of fun! Full boost before 3000 rpm and holds 8 psi to redline. The turbo is a CXRacing GT25 is what it is called.. but in reality it specs out to the Garrett equivalent of a GT2048. I am running a Kinugawa adjustable wastegate to get it to run 8 psi, and I had to port the hell out of the wastegate hole to get it to not boost creep.

Have you encountered any specific challenges or considerations with the GT2048 turbo on your 1NZ Yaris, especially regarding wastegate adjustments and potential boost creep?
