Micro Image Hood Design Contest

NOVEMBER 2:
OK everyone. I made an online album of all the designs.

There were approximately NINETY designs submitted. Wow.

1. Please CHECK to see if any designs you submitted are missing. It was a big job copying all the images (and a lot of duplicate filenames!!), so tell me what post # for anything that's missing.

I have some work to do, enjoy the album:

http://picasaweb.google.com/mcroimg/HoodDesignContest#

=========================
This is Thomas' idea, and a really good one. We want to offer our own vented hood, so who better to help offer design suggestions than YOU?

THE RULES

The contest is to design a vented hood for the Yaris liftback. (if there is enough genuine interest we could adapt the design to the sedan). There must be at least five entries for this contest to be valid.

Winner of this contest will get a free hood from the winning design, including shipping. If you're out of country, we'll absorb "most" of the cost for shipping.

Micro Image reserves the right to produce multiple copies of the design. (There will be a release form to fill out and return to claim your free hood).

Since Thomas wants to compete in the contest, I am the sole judge. However, please express opinions (respectfully) as they will count as "votes" and weigh on the final decision.

Obviously, I want to produce a hood that most people like and might want to buy. My thought is to run a Group Buy for the first production run, before selling to the general public.

*** The hood will most likely be molded in fiberglass, and NOT be carbon fiber.

Quality of your images is not being judged, so feel free to doodle on a napkin, take a pic with your cell phone and post it. Obviously, Photoshop skills will help to convey your idea, BUT don't worry -- we'll get the concept!

Contest ends at Midnight (PST) on SUNDAY November 2. Winner will be announced the following day.

ok, off you go then!

What is the function of the vented hood?

Let the hot air out? Pull cooler air in?

I assume that we do not want to allow rainwater to pour into our engine compartment while we're parked at work.

I also assume that we don't want the hood to inhale rain and spray on the highway in a storm.

Sorry, the engineer in me says function before form. Once you meet the functional requirements, you can make it pretty.

A forward facing scoop is useful in shoving cold air to the intake. If done right, it can have a "ram-air" effect where the pressure of the incoming air actually causes some slight compression at the intake, in essence a free very light turbo. You could also duct it so that the incoming air blows behind the engine, cooling the exhaust manifold.

reverse scoops, on the other hand, are used to help extract air from the engine bay. This can have 2 purposes: keeping underhood temperatures cooler, and allowing better airflow through the engine compartment, thus reducing the car's aerodynamic drag somewhat.

So, yes, as always, there's a compromise. Have a big'ol hole in your hood and rain will come through it. Though it is my understanding that most aftermarket hoods come with a shield under the vent that can be closed to make it waterproof.
