Water Pump gone at 33700 Miles

Got home from work tonite and my Yaris was running "weird". It would idle normally, then idle "rough" like it wanted to stall. then i heard the perverbial "swish, swish, swish" and KNEW something bad was wrong. Popped the hood lifted it up and BADA BING, BADA BOOM, I had this pretty pink dryed on substance on the underside of the hood. (see pic), hood.JPG this isnt my cars hood just put here for illustration purposes.

Called the Dealer and I have to bring it in tomorrow to have them look at it. LUCKILY I have a lifetime engine warranty from the dealer and another 2 months on my 90 day dealer warranty, PLUS another 3K miles on Toyota Warranty, so I am HOPING it'll get fixed and not cost me anything. This though is the dealer I was fighting with over the bad tires that were supposed to be changed when I bought the car, so I don't know....I guess I have to wait and see if they are going to tell me I voided the warranty somehow so I have to pay for the repair....wish me luck!

I'm on my 3rd water pump. The last one did the same thing... pink line on the hood. That was at 76,000km I think. I'm now just over 90K. I don't know if it's the bearings or just the seal that goes, but mine wasn't making any noise, just leaving a pink line in the hood.

I hope that the third one is a charm (the last one I mean)....Looks like I'd better buy a few of these ahead.

Why do waterpumps in these cars have such a short lifespan?
Enough for a bulletin from Toyota?

I don't know, but I sure am glad they aren't driven by the timing system like my old Honda is. Because it would be a ROYAL PITA to change it then.

wasn't there some correlation with people who upgraded pulleys and didn't have the belts tightened to spec having this issue more frequently than fully stock cars?

Trini still hasn't had an issue with his pump.... don't think he touched his pulley at all.

Short life time for Yaris WPs? My sons ECHO (same engine) has 139k on its WP.

BTW, this same thing happened at 16k on my mom's 2006 Corolla....
Dealer replaced it under the extended warr....
It's not just a Yaris thing, it appears.

45k miles on the water pump, and 24k miles on the pullies (all 3 NST pullies), and never one single issue.

If you aren't retarded, putting pullies wouldn't affect anything to do with the water pump. But if you are, like, you forget a bolt or don't tighten the belt when done, then yeah... it could happen

The dry residue left by the water pump is not from a faulty water pump it has to do with the super long life coolant Toyota uses. It appears that the coolant can cause this condition from time to time and is considered normal.

So the fact that my overflow was empty and I couldn't see coolant in the rad is considered normal?

How come my coolant is green and how does coolant drip upwards to the hood, and with that much leaking coolant there would be a significant puddle under the car after parking a while..

It only leaks out once the system is hot and under pressure. It comes out of the water pump shaft, and gets sprayed when it hits the spinning pulley.

Your coolant is green because someone has done a service and used the incorrect coolant. It goes onto the hood cause when the water pump starts to go out it leaks through the weep hole. And as the water pump pulley spins it flings it in a rotational pattern spraying all around it including the hood.
