how does your yaris fair against other cars youve owned?

Ive had my yaris liftback since January of 07 and the gas mileage as been decent. Until Ive gotten more hardcore about hypermiling I averaged between 36-38mpg and about 41-43mpg lately. Sure thats great for people whove driven crap their entire lives but thats just meh to me. The car I had before my yaris was an 89 ford probe turbo and I averaged 35mpg with that beast that rocked 145hp and 190 torque. The yaris was not a good trade off. I also have a 01 saturn SC-1 and a 95 del sol that perform a lot better than the yaris. The saturn gets over 40mpg without effort and the del sol gets a good 50mpg doing the bare minimum of hypermiling driving style. So even though its the most comfortable car Ive owned that got good mileage compared to my other cars its pretty much crap and should just sit in the driveway. It just seems like this car should beat out my del sol considering its lighter and an economy car versus a convertible sports car. Thoughts?

The Yaris is lighter than the tiny little Del Sol? But the other thing to consider is how much more air the Yaris has to push up and over compared to the Del Sol.

My '94 Geo Metro would get 43mpg highway all day long. lowest in-town I ever averaged (keep in mind, I was driving for fun, not economy here) was 28mpg, mostly flat-out.

My '12 Yaris has gotten me 36-37mpg mixed so far...only 500-or so miles on it so far.

But compared to the Metro, the Yaris is a gas-swilling swine. :P

My 89 Chevy Sprint (3 cyl 1 litre motor, 4 speed MT) use to get 45 mpg (American) if I drove it carefully on the highway.

My other car (2006 smart 3 cyl 0.8 litre diesel, 6 speed MT) gets into the low 60s MPG (American) on the highway

My understanding is automotive manufactures have had to add 400-600 pounds of weight (since my Chevy Sprint was made) to their cars to make them more crash worthy. This weight plus bigger engine in the Yaris has reduced MPG.

1972 Subaru DL - 36-38 MPG (carburetor w/leaded gas)

2001 Honda Civic EX - 38-40 MPG (reg gas)

2007 Yaris LB - 39 - 41 MPG (10% ethanol reg gas)

These numbers represent the best average MPG I could achieve on the highway at legal speeds.

I think the Yaris could achieve 43+ MPG with non-ethanol gas, and being driven at 50-55 MPH. But that is not real world.

A friend of mine has a older Toyota Corolla which still gets 45-50 mpg. When he brags about his mileage I ask him what his emissions level is and how much does his 'space frame' weigh along with air bags. My Yaris would get better than the mid-40'd mpg if I could rip all of the air pollution devices out and lighten the load by taking out all of the air bags.

it wasn't the automakers choice, it was all legislated. The yaris is about as light as a car can get legally. A Sprint or a Dodge Colt could never be made nowadays. One of the coolest cars I've driven was an '88 Mazda 323 turbo. 130 hp and 1800lbs is a heck of a great combination. You couldn't make that car either.

So I've owned a Saab 9000 mid '80's vintage. Fun car, would oversteer without warning. Fun stuff.

A 94 or so Taurus SHO. had tons of power, tons of luxury, but it was a pig. A well handling pig for sure, but you could tell it was heavy.

Saab Viggen. Awesome power, I found out what too much thrust and not enough grip did in a fwd car. i could step on the gas hard enough the car would go sideways instead of forward. I also bought it in manual never having driven a manual transmission. I learned quickly. I wish the Yaris had a clutch and tranny as nice as the Viggen.

Bought the Yaris and eventually sold the Viggen when I found someone who would pay what it was worth. Wouldn't change that unless gas prices were $1 a gallon or less.

My Yaris is spartan, and I honestly don't miss the luxury. Only thing I might add is cruise control.

my malibu...depending on what i had in it...got anywhere from 12-25mpg

my other malibu...got 20-23

my old 94 3.3 caravan...20-22 floored everywhere

my tercel got a best of a tank of 44 & was getting low consistant 40s, before i made it race car...it now gets 36-39mpg BEATING THE SHIT OUT OF IT. 15-17mpg while on the race track.

my old '06 xB anywhere from 31-39

my yaris i've gotten 18 tanks over 50mpg...but i have seen a range of 38 (beating it like a rented mule) to a best of 54...i love this car, not trying results in typically mid to upper 40s

Second best, after my 4 door Metro. I drove it to Seattle and back once at 70 to 80 the entire way, and got 48 MPG! My Yaris sure drives and feels better though, safer too I guess. With all the talk of the recent prices of a barrel of oil, I am VERY HAPPY to be driving a Yaris.

The best. I use to own a Nissan pulsar 4 door sedan.It was ok..bought it for 20 k, roughly the same price as the yaris the same loan term (4 years).After paying off the Nissan I gave it my bro.I paid off the Yaris last year.All I have to is i like the Yaris and it drives better.Reliable and good all round performer for a daily driver.I am impressed with the reliability.

I am over purchasing cars for now.I am working on a 74 standard vw beetle it will be my weekend car.

I just bought my '08 Yaris, MT, liftback and I'm not very satisfied with what I was hoping. I drive 450-500 miles a week and 90% is flat highway with cruise control on.

35.84 - 10.3 gal 2-20-12
35.61 - 10.5 gal 2-15-12
36.52 - 9.99 gal 2-10-12
37.71 - 6.71 gal 2-6-12

I had a '01 Focus AT hatchback, getting about 27mpg
before that I had a '03 Cavalier AT 4-door and getting about 32mpg

I should have kept the Chevy, at least it was paid off.

well...

we got the yaris after we traded in the matrix. Matrix was drinking gas like it was water and made alot of engine noise (which my parents did not like) and also it was 4wd so that explains the mpg but switching to the yaris, amazing i have to say. My parents love it like its to keep forever although my dad would like a better clearance for when it snows (because it gets stuck). He would also like it if it had traction control (we own a 2008 yaris)

we also have a sienna, but that is uncomparable to the yaris, def. diffrent class but we use the sienna to travel while the yaris is for short trips

and my car is the is300, not comparable, but its either performance or mpg. Step in the yaris for mpg, is300 for performance. (if we are talking about just engine that is)


btw, i am new to this forum, i am an active person on my.is so hello all! we own a 2008 yaris, a 2002 is300, and a 2006 sienna... yea.. we love toyotas =]

I had a del sol. Vtec. The best runing car I had ever owned. Had it at 130mph once and it would climb a 7% grade doing over 100 mph. However, it only got 30-33mpg around town and the same on the highway. The Yaris gets 40 in town and up to 45 highway.

07 Yaris 5MT - 31-36 MPG so far.... So far so good. When I drive I get better MPG than when my GF drives. Haha

02 Camaro Z28 6MT - 20-30 MPG......Very surprising. City = 20-22MPG but highway cruises will land me 30MPG! This is a car with over 310 RWHP! and 340 RWTQ!

04 Accord V6 6MT - 22-28 MPG......Great car with great power. It gets better MPG than my buddies 04 I4 5MT.

91 Turbo Miata 5MT - 18-23 MPG........230+ RWHP and still got decent MPG

91 MR2 NA 5MT - 18-21 MPG.........IMO Bad MPG for a NA I4...

99 Prelude 5MT - 18-21 MPG.........Also bad for a 160 whp honda...

02 Lexus ES300 4AT - 16-20 MPG.......a tank....

All mixed city / highway driving.
