Question Vitz 2001 1.0 manual rpm

Hello friends

First of all, thanks for making this forum a platform for discussing about our cars. I would like to apologize if I am posting at the wrong place; this is my first post.

I own a 2001 toyota vitz imported from japan (1.0, 1sz-fe), with a 5 speed manual transmission. I recently installed a tachometer (thanks for all the help about that). However, I am having some "headaches" as I cannot really decipher the rpms.

First, the car idles at around 400 rpm after being warm (starts at 600, drops to 400). Also, I do not really know when to change gears. Normally, for example, I shift from 3rd to 4th once the car reaches 40km/h; but then, the tach shows around 1400 rpm. I hit 2000 rpm in 5th gear at 80km/h.

Is this normal? I often read that gears should be changed at around 2000 rpm but it seems too much for the little engine; it starts screaming at 2000rpm and 3000 is a pain to the ears. I was wondering if the rpm readings are right, and if this behaviour is normal for the engine. it seems to be designed to operate optimally at low rpms (below 2000 at least, or is my tach giving wrong readings?)

Thank you for your advice!

Anyone, please? A link where I can find the info?

I am having some doubts about the readings.

Thanks!

I am sorry noone with knowledge of your engine has replied yet. I am assuming that your engine is a diesel. My 1.5 litre petrol Yaris idles at different speeds as it goes through its warmup so I would not be too concerned about the variation in rev readings after starting. If your engine is comfortable changing gears at 1400rpm than I would use that as a guide and use your tacho to change at that revs in each gear. My Yaris is an auto (with a tacho) so changing gears is not really an issue. I also have a manual car (1972 MGB) and tend to change gears in that car by how it feels, in other words I can feel the "sweet" spot for the engine.
I hope this sets your mind at rest until someone with knowledge of your particular engine replies.
regards Muz

It appears that I assumed wrong and your engine is indeed a petrol. I had a quick read around on the internet and it appears that the idle speed for your engine is about 550 so I suspect your new tacho is reading OK.

Thank you very much Muz

Sorry about the name, I use it in all forums (I am a big fan of diesel engines and I intend some day to own a pickup!)

The engine is indeed a petrol one and it appears that it delivers enough torque below 2000 rpm. I did not have the opportunity to go on the motorway yet, so I will upload the behaviour at 100km/h some time soon.

Thanks again!
