oops is too much power bad

hey guys, i accidentally bought the wrong amp, i was looking for a 1000w mono amp and accidentally got a 1000w, 2 channel amp, its a ppi a1000. its rated at the following
# 1000 Watts max
# 175 Watts x 2 @ 4 ohms
# 250 Watts x 2 @ 2 ohms
# 500 Watts x 1 @ 4 ohm
# bridged (mono) load indepence in stereo:2-8 ohms
# load indepence in bridged:4-8 ohms
# Amplifier efficiency is 50% into 2 ohm load at max power.

i was considering using it to power up a set of component speakers rated at 100w rms max 200w. so can i use this amp to power up the speakers at 4ohms and will it be fine or its too much power for the speakers to handle. or should i just look for 2 subs and use the amp to power it up.

You can't give speakers too much power. They just won't use what they don't need. You can run the speakers off it if you want. It would be a huge waste though. I say run the subs. My 4 JL's are set to two 500/1's and I've never had a problem. So 1000/2 should be huge.

More power = more headroom. The ability to play with less distortion.

It's more likely to blow a speaker with a small amp run to distortion than with a large amp run clean. You can, on loud transients, have so much power that you push a voicecoil out of the magnet gap, but that is rare.

Enjoy the headroom!
