Is the cutoff RPM or Speed? - Toyota Yaris Forums

simple question as that. I noticed that at 113 MPH the car loses power but i have been 117 MPH before. so was it supposed ot cut off at an RPM or at a speed?

Rev-limiter or Speed-Limiter?

Both.

Rev limiter is 6250, speed limiter is approximately 115. It's possible to "cheat" either one a little depending on driving conditions, as shown by varying reports.

Mine (1.5L) revs up to 6,400 RPM.

I heard that pulling the parking brake just 1 click will override the speed limiter.
But I really didn't notice the effect. Maybe that was the fastest my Yaris will go

^ He is right to a point. It is actually 118 which is programmed into the stock ECU. The major catch here is how Toyota actually performs both limiters which is probably the easiest way for them to do it and and that force the fuel system to go stupid lean which really isn't good for the engine. Not saying that you will blow up a totally stock motor after hitting the limit too much, but it will increase wear/tear on it. Just something to be aware of. I honestly have no idea how other manufacturers do it, perhaps it is the same

can anyone help me..I just did an engine swap using 1nz-fe 1.5L. unfortunately, I experienced the engine cut off at around 2500-3000 rpm.

It's normal mate.

1st to 2nd gear : 2500 to 3000 rpm

3rd to 4th : probably the same.

Okay...so there IS a engine-speed limiter in the computerized fuel-injection/emissions system?

I didn't know that.

Yes....the way the ECM handles via the speed sensor and cluster is that once the speedometer returns that 118 has been reached then the ECM leans out your fuel drastically to "force" you to reduce speed. I found that it would drop me depending on the suspension setup (for example wheel/tire combo) I could lose between 8 on the high end and 4 on the low end of mph lost. I found this out over 20+ land speed runs which gave a great way to figure it out. Essentially riding off the speed limit cut is a bad thing.

Okay. But is it also linked to engine RPMs?

I have an automatic and no tachometer. From time to time, once every couple of years or thereabouts, I have cause to be in the Rockies. I don't like to ride the brakes down long downgrades; with a manual and tach it's of course easy to monitor RPMs. And shift.

With an auto, if 3 doesn't give enough engine braking, I might want to use 2 - but shifting in and out of it is gonna be hard on the motor mounts. I don't want to over-rev when climbing short upgrades.

...as well, once I got my floor mat lodged on the accelerator pedal with my manual - as I was running up the gears. Engine ran away when I got on the clutch. It was my 2009 and brand new at the time; and I'd always wondered if I'd over-revved it (of course I was too busy trying to figure out what was going ON at the time to be staring at the tach).

So...speed only? Or RPMs, also?

According to what we saw during the dyno pulls the rpm limiter was forcing into lean conditions as well however the behavior was different as you don't necessarily lose power as you do when you hit the speed limiter.
