Intercooler for non-turbo?

Need opinions on adding the intercooler for non-turbo car.

Smth like below
http://www.ebay.com/itm/ALUMINUM-BAR...fb4fb5&vxp=mtr

Technically, the project is pretty straightforward: I already have a TRD cai which goes under the fender, extending the tubes to the radiator and placing the filter further under the opposite fender is not difficult.

Any potential gains? Cons?

Thx

lol. no gains.
It's the same thing as extending the piping to the center and placing the filter in the center instead of under the fender.
Cons? Extra baggage that you don't need. Longer air travel. Looks ghey when you open up your hood and don't see a turbo.

zero upside, and it can only make the air warmer, which will reduce hp.

Intercooler with a turbo makes sense because boost is created by hot exhaust gas, and because the air is compressed. Boost from a supercharger also compresses the air; compressed air gets heated up. I don't see much point in a "normal" n/a application.

I have seen extreme guys use an air/water intercooler and actually put ice in the intercooler (with a turbo) to decrease temps even further though I agree that gains would be minimal and probably not even noticeable.

on a drag strip with track temps hitting 100 degrees, ice everywhere will help.

I would have to disagree with everyone in this thread.

I do believe I am the only one who has actually installed an IC on a non-boosted yaris. although i did not dyno it the ButtDyno did notice a difference.

Also with my OBD2 scanner, I was noticing IAT lower then with just my intake.

Also i noticed possibly due to the longer intake/bigger filtered air volume the car seemed more peppy.

keep in mind i am not claiming HUGE hp gains, but definatly noticed a difference. And it looks dang cool

How can the intake air be any colder than ambient temps? A proper COLD AIR INTAKE is drawing in air at ambient temps, so adding an intercooler will only add restriction REDUCING hp.

I think intake air should be routed through the air conditioner.

The problem is that there is no proper air intake on the market that would draw air at ambient temperature.. to achieve this air would have to be drawn from in front of the radiator

I know my SRI air temps usually run about 5 degrees hotter than ambient (as per my ultragauge) so I don't think you will really see much of an improvement with that small of a difference. think of driving on a cool summer day vs a warm summer day.

5 degrees difference sounds negligible

thanks

I guess I need to find the way to measure temperature near the air filter (I use TRD intake) as compare it to the ambient temps myself

I don't think in my 10+ years of browsing car forums that I've come across such a topic... wow

If your car has the outside temp gauge and you have a scangauge/ultragauge it is really easy to compare the two.

I will admit, it is a very strange topic. we do try to squeeze every bit out of these cars. I think it is good to think outside the box from time to time. sometimes you find something new, sometimes you don't.

Reminds of the motorcycle rider who bought a can of NOS from 7-Eleven and poured it in his gas tank.
