What FE do you get at different times of the year?

What kind of FE do you get at different times of the year?

I got new tires a little over a year ago - Yokohama Avid V4S's 205/55/15 and run them at ~42 PSI year round. Other than that the car is stock (manual) and I get 40-46 MPG if it's warm out, 33-39 if it's windy out, 32-38 if it's below zero outside, and everything else is random. Lately it's been in the 50s here in MN so I've been able to pull my record tank average of 47 MPG!

I also don't really understand how people can get such low FE numbers. This is the car I learned to drive a manual in and my worst tank of all time was 34 MPG. I installed the tach and now with better shift points (~2300 rpm) get 40+ pretty much every time, especially in city trips where there's no air resistance.

Anyways since it's been about 6 months since it's been washed, this weekend the car is getting a great wash and wax - I plan to spend about 8 hours on it total.

I have an auto and I get 36-39 extreme cold winter and last summer I got 44-48. With this springish weather I've been getting into the 40's again which seems very nice after a long winter.

Worst tank ever was the dealer tank. I drove the car HARD for proper break in. Hammered the bugger leaving the dealership and all the 45 mile drive home over very big hills. I literally let speed drop to about 30 at the base of the hills then mashed the gas and accelerated the full length of the hill, then would engine brake down the back side. Over and over. That whole tank I drove that way plus accelerated hard away from each stop light and stop sign. Still got 35.7 mpg! Amazing little cars!

Best tank ever is 48.0 mpg with many over 45.

2009-2010 Winter using non-ethanol gas: 44-48 MPG
2010 Summer using non-ethanol gas: 49-53 MPG
2010-2011 Winter (mixed non-ethanol & ethanol): 42-46
Summer 2011: ???

I will see how my MPG's are this Summer using ethanol? I hear you get around 2-3 MPG less using ethanol. So, I'm looking at coming up Summer to be 47-50 MPG?

Cheers!

They are going E15 here so you can bet mileage will fall a bit.

Hmmmm... This is definitely not the recommended break-in procedure written in the owner's manual...

Anyway, I only got mine at the beginning of November so it's been all Winter driving so far. This is the first car I've actually been watching FE and I am getting 37MPG over the 13,000 miles I've had it. I look forward to Summer when FE should go up. I keep the tires at about 35PSI, BTW.

I went back to the brand I was running it took several tanks to gain a lil of my fuel mileage back after 6 tanks I was back to normal..

You must live in a warm area then (AL it looks like). Here in MN I park outside all year round and do several <0* startups that suck gas. I usually let the car warm up until the water hits 35* then start driving gently. If it's not windy I can still manage about 35 unless it's short trips. When it snowed and we had 8 inches the car still plowed right through it all but got 18 MPG just for that trip lol.

I don't think a Prius would do much better in the cold.

When I broke my car in I drove it quite gingerly (still do) and it burns no oil or shows any sign of trouble.

I tried Techron before and noticed no difference. I'm not sure seafoam and fuel additive products work, at least not on relatively new cars.

Nope and for good reason. More here:

http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

The key nowadays to getting good ring seal is producing enough pressure to get the rings to seat EARLY. Its a "limited time opportunity". Suffice it to say my engine has produced excellent oil analysis results that are consistent with a much quicker break in. Also my auto Yaris will produce fuel economy numbers that are competitive with the manuals so I didn't hurt it too bad! I'd do it again for sure. All my new vehicles get the same treatment.

Remember, everything that comes from a car company isn't necessarily from the engineers-it has to make it past the lawyers and bean counters first!
