Talking 1st Annual Texas Mega Trip (possible cannonball run)

Ok guys,

This is a feeler to see what people think about a LONG trip convoy or possibly for even more grins a Cannonball Run!! I'm thinking summertime from the DFW to something amazing like Yellowstone for some completely different extremes in driving from what we are used to here in the Lone Star. Suggestions for dates or if anyone would even be able to pull this off at all. If its not at least 6 cars in im not going to bother unless anyone wants to go camping with me in the mountains and i might reconsider if its set in stone, spit shaken, and promised no back outs. I think this forum needs a trip of epic proportions. Seriously guys, lets do something awesome... I'm willing to even go all the way to hang out with our canadian brothers if people are in.... I have 2 weeks of vacation that I will never end up using and i would like to have something to show for it. I'm pretty darn partial to hoofin it to Yellowstone but alone will be poo poo. I'll host as far as finding routes for the trip and coordinating this.

That sound's massively amazing. I'd love to if I could... its possible just an extreme matter of money... & gas will prob be cheaper than the food and lodging... tho i am partial to sleeping in my car lol

Talking

MONEY.............?
Dude count in gas and food with 2 days lodging... I'm camping. This trip could easily be done on the cheap..... According to fuel cost calculator its $220 in gas.... I imagine a good $100 in food isn't too far off. lodging would find some random place in between here and yellowstone to stop for like $39-$49 a night.... Lets total up so far..... Hmmmm carry the two and YES $418. Besides a small cruise outta galveston can you honestly say that this isn't one of the least costly trips youve seen for going that far away? And hey if you convoy up in same car..... SAVINGS!!!! Split the gas and lodging (pay for only one) and lets calculate that down again.... Hmmmm cary the 9.... $259 considering they both still need to pay for own food. Tell me a better trip you can make for that far for that long for a measly $259?!? If anything this is the BEST RECESSION TRIP EVER!!!! I think i should get a Nobel Prize for my work in doing everything on the cheap. Heck if you want money saving ideas and tips just hit me up.

Again, that is an awesome idea. But I think you may be diving in a bit to far first. Why not start with like a convoy to Dallas/SA/Austin first. This way we can iron any bugs out in state. Also, if they choose the locals can drive to family/home/camping, if we do it in the next couple months it won't be crazy hot...

Start small if the interest is there people will find a way.

I mentioned this at the SA meet, doing a trip up to the lake. Not sure which lake, but a good lake here where we can go camping/boating/fishing/w/e, but something that's still within 6 hours of home for everyone.

My wife suggested even going out to Corpus Christi, or South Padre, or Mustang Island, or Port Aransas.

Haven't hit the coast in forever, and a trip there could get everyone together for like a good weekend, from Odessa to Houston :D

The only problem with a Gulf Coast meet is that it is a much longer drive for those coming from the DFW area or out west (it would be 485 miles from Odessa to CC). That's why we were thinking Belton Lake near Killeen was a more centralized location. Lake Buchanan, as we discussed on Sunday, is another good option...

Cheers! M2

What about Fredricksburg or ConCan, GORGEOUS driving terrain, would make some great pics

Well at the end of the day I am interested, but I just don't see anyone getting off for that amount of time. (in any real numbers I mean) I wish this weren't the case but it is... :(

I agree, but for some reason we've been focused on bodies of water...

But anywhere in the Hill Country would be great. Heck, I'd recommend Luckenbach but it's always filled with bikers and whatnot...but there are a ton of towns in the HC that would make great destinations!

Cheers! M2

A long while ago, Gruene was discussed as a possible meeting place...

Last year I took a road trip with my family up to Montana. It was about a 5000mile road trip. It cost me way more than I had originally thought. BUT that being said I would love to go back. It was beautiful up there. Don't know how long I'd be able to take off work this year for that kind of thing though.

But if we wanna do something more local like others have suggested that would be cool. I been meaning to take my kids camping somewhere at some point. This would be a good opportunity to do so i think.

Gruene has water, camping, pretty scenery, Good places to hang out, things to do.. Its pretty central, maybe not fully but nothing is perfect. Fredricksburg is kinda close to lake lbj..

Gruene is nice but not very big and it gets pretty crowded on the weekends, I don't know if we'd be able to reserve an area where we could park all of our Yarii together...

Cheers! M2

I love the HC idea, but maybe aim for a less-popular state park. The Lake Buchannan or Kileen idea has merit. Also, there are some great places down around Shiner (can you say "brewery tour?) and LaGrange. Bastrop State Park is very centrally-located, has some awesome country drives through the pines, and doesn't seem to get as crowded as other places. Plus, its close enough to Austin that you young-uns could piggy back a 6th street visit the night before or after the GTG.
