Electric window operation intermittent

Got in the car this morning and the power windows wouldnt work. also the button for all the power locks wouldnt work was if the whole drivers side power console for window operation was dead About a block down the road everything was working fine, bout a mile down the road window operation failed again, got to destination windows working fine?
What could be the problem?

Loose wire? Have you taken your door panels off before, and maybe didn't clip the wire back in all the way?

Checked all fuses and grounds in engine bay and nothing seems amiss..taking the door panel off sounds like something i'd rather not do as if you dont do it right it wont go back together right.
So do i take it to dealer or my private mechanic??

I'm also wondering if one of the other 3 drivers in the family left the drivers window open and rain got on the console? they all deny it..

private mechanic also may disassemble door correctly and then there
may be some annoying gap left over

---->if you don't want to do it because you want it perfect...dealer. they know
the steps and have toyota SST if needed

You are right about the dealer having the best equipment to fix the problem but i just dont trust dealers.Eg; if its just a wire come loose and they plug it back in they'll charge me for a whole new module and 3 hours labor, whereas my private mechanic under a similar situation will just plug the wire back in and charge me labor for taking the door panel off, think i'll start with the trusted private mechanic..
When i was a lot younger i used to work at several dealers and discovered just how unscrupulous and devoid of integrity they can be to make a buck..

ive noticed water lands right on those switches during a rain. I have an extra complete unit with the trim cover already on in my parts stash. I bought it on Ebay for $65!
PS: Not for sale....

Jambo101, how savy are you? If you can get a volt meter, you could take the door apart and check everything out. CTScott might also be able to help tell you what wires to "short out" to make a window go up or down. Also, you could take the module apart and see if there is any damage to the circuit board.

Another strange possibility could be a mouse. Ever had a problem with those?

Private mechanics diagnosis = Broken wire in the harness going from the car body to the drivers door. Every time he giggled that harness the window would operate..

Took the guy 20 minutes to find the break in the harness..
Charged me $30.. I can only imagine what the dealer would have charged..

Go to the parts store and get a compressed air nozzel. Explain to the guy there you want to blow the moisture out of the switches on your door because the rain got it. He will show you what to get.

Go to a gas station with free compressed air with a vice grip and a friend. While friend holds a kink in the air take the fitting off and install your nozzle. Blow air at full blast on the switches for a few minutes. You might see water come out. Or not. Put the air chuck back on when youre done.

I have a feeling though water in the switches would blow the fuse. Maybe not...

Where the harness disappeared into the drivers door, seems there was some kind of kink and 3 of the wires looked like they were being slowly cut..
Nice thing about my private mechanic he doesnt mind if you stand there and watch him do the job, very comforting as you can see exactly what he's doing..
